Description ZOOM IN

Kerrigan Queen of Blades from Stracraft aka even more Blizzard Fan Art.

I personally love Kerrigan. I think her concept is just amazing and I love the fact that she looks like the most evil "Evil Queen" you could imagine even though she is quite the sweetie. They made a pretty cool background story around her and she was actually the first hero in HotS I started to play because I sympathized with the character and not just because of the play style.

Drawing Kerrigan was actually very fun but also very challenging. Because of her unusual body features there was no way to do a complete line art. I had to add all the structure of the body trough shading and highlighting and damn I had no fucking idea what I was doing. With my last drawing "lunara" I tried the first time to give something more structure trough shading and highlighting and I had to take everything I learned in my last drawing and took it in this one.  I mean I know that it's visible that I had obviously no idea what the hell I was doing but I enjoyed the experiment and I'm actually kinda proud of the result considering that I really had zero knowledge.  If you have any helpful tutorials about airbrush shading/highlighting please let me know!

Oh yeah I used a lot of different references for this one and kinda mixed them up. It's pretty hard to get a good reference of Kerrigan and there are a lot of different looks. As an example, I found 3 different eye colors for her. In the wiki it was yellow but I decided to use purple instead because it makes her look way more friendly.

I'm always very open for critique so please comment anything that comes in your mind that could help me to improve. It's really very very appreciated and you will get an imaginary cookie in return.

If you like my drawing please and    - Don't forget to check out my gallery and  if you like what you see.

Thank y'all for the support and please let me now if you would like me to critique your work as well or if you think that I should peek in your gallery!

______________

For critique groups etc.

- I had my problems with proper shading and highlighting as already mentioned before. This was my first try and I would be really really grateful for ANY advice / tutorial you may have for me.

- I'm pretty happy with her face but I would like to hear other opinions about it

- Do you think the anatomy is somewhere of?

- How would you improve the pose etc?

- what's your general impact?

- As always: Please say anything that you notice about the drawing, there is no need to hold back any of your thoughts.

Hi, thanks for the fave btw. I hope the redline helped in some way. I think I missed out on giving proper feedback on my deviation so here goes:

The pose is actually really neat. Hips and shoulders are tilted opposite ways, which makes it quite dynamic despite facing straight towards the viewer.
I have a strong suspicion that your sketch looked livelier than the finished product (it usually does) and I think you should work messier/sketchier, because as the pose looks good, yet your lines are very restrictive and don't quite follow the actual anatomy (the nose is very basic; the breasts are way different; no armpits, no collar bones...) .
Therefore it seems to me that you understand human anatomy quite well and judging from your gallery you have a great sense of composition, but cannot transfer it to the medium i.e. SAI, Photoshop or whatever program you are using.

In short:
+++ Overall effect --> Pose, composition, colour scheme
 - - -  Technique     --> Line weight, line quality, shading - Though I think this is partially a hardware/software-problem. You might want to check up on tutorials regarding the program you're using or consider using another program. Also play with your hardware (tablet settings) and software settings (brush dynamics, density, edge hardness, layer modes, etc.) to get a feel for it and find a combination and method that works for you.

Und genau da liegt der Hase im Pfeffer ("there lies the bunny in the pepper..."

This is cool! I love the texture/patterning, the only thing i can suggest for highlighting/shading is that experimenting with brush types and settings and finding the right one for you really helps with developing a technique.

Yeah I thought about finding a mix between airbrush and watercolor

As said it was my first attempt so it can only get better, right?

Hey!
Dropping by from  :iconprojectcomment: and hopefully with some helpful ideas.
All in all the impact of the picture is good. The anatomy looks right and the pose has some relaxed grace to it. Very Kerrigan-like  So in my opinion the basic sketch is very good!
I also like the face, but the smile is maybe a bit too nice. More like beauty shot, less like the killing machine queen
So my critique will be mainly on the color.
First off, try to add some depth to the background, nothing elaborate, more like in here:
www.artstation.com/artwork/9Ey…
This will also help you to fix the light source (direction, temperature etc.), which is at the moment a bit indefinite and diffuse. The light can be like in your picture on a cloudy day, but such light flattens the image as you can not play with deep shadows and bright highlights.
In my opinion (and I am by no means an expert) the texture needs more definition. Even though you work with airbrushes don't shy away from hard edges, you need them! You can use multiple types of brushes in one picture, pick at least one hard (but don't go berzerk with it ).
Keeping the outlines is a very interesting decision, but it is hard to get it working. You can look up wallpapers for GTA5, they use this kind of style and they know how to do it right (I don't, wich I would.... so, can't help you with this  ).
Some minor things: you might add some highlights to the hair to give them a bit more definition; maybe out one heel down, on the right side probably to keep the hip in the same position.

But don't get me wrong, the picture is really good, you just need some more practice

Hey - Thank you very much for your critique!

I actually wanted to make her look kind - I love Kerrigan because she's actually not the killing machine queen she's used to be....well not anymore (to be fair I would be damn mad too if my own people would betray me - there would be no need for any psy-control to make me damn evil) My first version, was Kerrigan with yellow eyes and "evil-eyebrows"

The pose is actually the pose from HotS in champion selection   - I suck at finding my own poses and I felt like I hadn't enough knowledge about Kerrigan to experiment with my own poses, I will try to focus on that in another drawing with a less complicated character

Thank you for the link it seems to be very useful - I wasn't really happy with my background I tried out a shitton of background colors and nothing seemed to fit very well - never thought that it could be so difficult to just create a "one-color" simple background

I will try to experiment with more brushes (thought about using my watercolor brush). I actually tried to find some tutorials about which brushes I should use and how I should use them to shade but I haven't really found anything....I really expected to find a lot of videos on that topic but nope.   (If you have any helpful advice on that topic I would be sooo glad to hear it )

Funny that you talk about the outlines because I actually didn't want to keep them. When I finished my lineart to Kerrigan it was pretty clear that it wouldn't work out with her body so I decided to work with the airbrush tool and overdraw the outlines in my last step - I've never done that before and yeah - it looked horrible   So I decided to let the outlines be outlines, hoping that it wouldn't look to displaced.

I will try to improve my placement of the highlights - again thank you very much for your time and your critique

www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTxzgc…
