Description I drew this while I was on a cruise ship back in December and it's taken me, for some reason, just an inordinate amount of time to finish. College is winding down to completion which means I just get busier and busier, so I've had a difficult time getting anything done.

Corel Painter 11, airbrush, more hours than I'd like to admit. I simply could not figure out a background for this that wouldn't take away from the wings or look awkward because of his pose and how much space he takes up, but in the end, I'm so burnt out on this picture that I'm just going to call it done for now. I know his flower isn't very easy to see because of the background, but oh well. I might explore more of the floral theme in the next piece I do, if I do any more dragons for a while.

Over all, this piece leaves me with sort of a bad taste in my mouth. It was frustrating, time consuming, and I ended up having to add a little bit of line work to his face which kills me to do because I'm trying very hard to do only lineless paintings. Also been feeling like a real dope because I know I'm using Painter comparatively inefficiently, but I'm working on that.

If you want to use this for anything, please ask. I'll probably say yes. :]

My favourite parts here are by far the face and wings! Though, I would like to glance over your shoulder and see how you did those scales! Like the sig too btw!

Sorry I haven't been on DA in like FOREVER! XP

Hah, god, this piece was the pain in the ass of my life. I did it before I learned how to use Corel more efficiently so it took me probably two months to complete. The big thick scales were actually fairly easy, I just drew the repetitive shapes and shaded accordingly, but I used a really dilute opacity (probably like 1-2%) with a spattery airbrush to get the kind of freckles across the ribs and legs. The piece could have come out better, but I was definitely still learning then, so oh well. Glad you enjoyed! And glad to see you on here finally! By the way, probably sometime today I'll be posting some back story I've been working on for my third book, just some little things to tide me over until I start principle writing, if you're interested

Well hot DOG, I was just thinking about you seconds before I read this, and wondering, for some reason, "I wonder if, even though she bought a tablet, she still prefers doing most of her stuff in charcoal. Hmm. She hasn't been putting out as much work lately, maybe digital art takes longer for her like it does for me?" Conclusion: I'm psychic. Man, I've been also thinking that when I have money to burn on tattoos, that I should ask you to help me draw the people for them. I win a lot less at people than you, we've discussed this. XD

Glad you enjoy! I was thinking maybe I should at least do some sort of a gray background to offset the flowers, it bugs me to death that they're hard to see because of the background, but for some reason I was just so burnt out on this that I couldn't get myself to do anything else for it. I was thinking as I was doing the wings that they remind me of the glowy cave ceiling in that giant cave Black Reach in Skyrim. Which gives me an idea, maybe I could at least do a sort of translucent, faded background with the same sort of style as his wings. Hmm..

For some reasons I'm thinking about seahorses when I see this. I especilly like the wings, they look so "space"-like XD

You know, I was experimenting with the wings because I wasn't sure how I wanted to do them, and when I added the white spots and the white airbrushing to the big black spots, I was thinking that, accidentally, I'd made them look like starts and comets. Which I liked a lot, considering almost all my other digital art is space based. Glad you enjoy it, I think of land horses when I look at this, which is why I made his shadow a horse head. :]

I was thinking that the wings reminded me of fins, hence why seahorses XD

it looks pretty darn cool, though the flowery frill kinda threw me off (LOL Flower Dragons FTW ) But hey, you have no lines to fall back on yet your picture holds up really well. Well done! The head I think is done really well, but the wings and body aren't quite as detailed so it's not lack of skill or anything, just a slight contrast. But hey, it's art, and that's all that really matters Well done!

You know, I was afraid at first that the head wasn't going to stand up to the rest, because it was hard to get the sharp shadows and lines without adding hard lines, and it's hard too because I use airbrush, which is very.. insubstantial? in how it lays down color, but I'm actually happy with how it came out in the end, even if it took a lot of trials to find a scale pattern I liked. The flower bugs me because the white parts are hard to see, but blah, whatever, I just couldn't think of a background. I don't really have any idea why I drew a flower on him, except that at first I scribbled puffy clown hair on him to entertain Drew, and then it turned into a flower. I drew this while I was on the cruise, so I can't vouch for whatever my brain was thinking at the time XD The one I'm working on now, I'm trying out oils on Corel, and they definitely offer a lot less control than airbrush, so I'm having to relinquish some control, and that's a surprising challenge. But anyways, you know how I ramble. Glad you like it, I've been wanting to do more game and sci-fi related art, but maybe it'll take ME1/2 replays to get me back in the mood :]

Interesting, I don't think Photoshop has this airbrush thing so I'm not exactly sure what kind of effect that usually gets But hey! Still looks good. Haha, I'm sure Drew liked the outcome as much as I did, it's very unique and altogether striking when put together with a giant dragon body lol! OMG MASS EFFECT My life slowly winds to a close...

Aw, thanks a lot! I really wish I had a better idea for a background, but it was just so hard to incorporate something that wouldn't take away from the colors. Last night while I was working on the face I was thinking it was going to turn out crappy and not as emotional-looking as it did with the line art intact, but I'm grudgingly happy with how it turned out in the end. Really glad you enjoyed it, that's what making art is all about, after all! :]
