Description Another Raven picture inspired by a Celtic Divination book! This time The Celtic Lunar Zodiac (illustration by Margaret Walty).

The idea behind the picture is that it is Winter Solstice (the Nameless Day), the shortest day of the year, when the sun stands still between shortening and lengthening. The Elder Tree (seen in the foreground) is called Ruis in the Celtic system, and is assigned to this day (of course mistletoe is the plant associated with this day). The stones with spirals and the doorway are from the temple of Newgrange in Ireland, where the rising sun shines down a passageway into the earth on the winter solstice. The child that is conceived then is the child of the year, the symbolic fruit of the shaft of sunlight penetrating into the dark womb of earth.

I haven't actually finished this, but can't really decide how to finish it off. The actual picture has a baby in the centre but I'm not sure.

Excellent drawing, excellent title.
I firmly believe that a well-considered title is as important as the piece itself. I probably would not have stopped to really examine this drawing from the thumbnail alone, but the TITLE caught my attention and I am very happy that I paused to full-view and read your comments.
A truly wonderful rendering----put it in a frame!

I love the symbolism, and how it is well executed. The center of the picture between the raven and the tree seems a bit lacking. And if you do decide to put the child in, I (in my opinion only) believe that it should rest there.

this piece is beautiful and sombre in its mysticism and symbolism.
