Concept art for beings called magpies. They can look like the real deal when they want to, but use this shape when appearing to certain mortals.
This is hardly the final design, but there you go.

Haha I doubt change would be necessary; my magpies are a group of birds whose human forms are merely symbolic. They aren't singular/main characters.

Thank you so incredibly much. Most of this image was created by simply lifting my pencil from the paper less, involving a lot of continuous lines. (Also, you're correct about the eyes -- magpies are notorious thieves and are attracted to shiny objects).

first and foremost, i'm completely intrigued by this magpie concept. it's truly haunting in a way that leaves me wanting more. artistically, the warm colors work very well, it gives off a great sense of era. i also really like the almost parchment effect of the background.
i have to say my the part of the image my eye keeps wandering to is her bare skin. her exposed back and arm are bony. it's drawn well, if that's what you were going for.
technically speaking, i see improve with anatomical stance, shading, brushstrokes, and lines.
i can't wait to see more. c:

I really want the finished design for the magpies to be both beautiful and haunting, so I was trying to combine both of those things. I wanted to keep them bony, yeah, and I'll probably mess around with the colors so there's perhaps more contrast between skin and dress, if that's the route I end up going -- I have their purpose in my head, now I'm just trying to nail the design.

Holy FUCK Nate this is some really amazing character design O_O I love the more armlike take on wingarms, complete with human upper arms and feathered elbows; I love the mask, too, and the feathered ears, and how the muted warm colours of the background tie those together with the white of the hair and gown and the pale of the skin. The eye-beam is nifty too. Somehow the whole thing taken together has a vaguely Mucha-esque vibe to it.
