Description This is a sliding rock.
you can find them on the death valley's RaceTrack Playa, a dry lake where these huge stones move !!, leaving a trace behind them.
the most relevant theory explaining this movements involves heavy rain, transforming the playa in a mud pool, and strong winds.

Not a very original shot of these rocks, there is plenty similar shots over the net, but I still like it

I recently saw a very similar photo in Digital Slr Photography magazine and I thought how beautiful though I didn't know if the effect was human made or natural. Your photo is really inspiring

wonderful too. maybe you should add contrast on the ground. The first of these three have perfect contrast on the ground.

GoranDA In reply to WithinEye [2008-04-17 19:52:50 +0000 UTC]

the first one was shot at sunset, this one around 2 or 3 pm, the difference in the contrast comes from there. the low angle light of the sunset really helped to bring out the floor contrast.
thx

oups !!, did you stop at the first parking place ? there is actually no sliding rock there... you had to go further on the dirt road until the end of the "race track", the sliding rocks are all at the south end of the playa...
thank you very much for the s and

the shot is done with a circular polarizer, and that's what give this sky

I've seen a lot of photos of these rocks, but never an explanation. I always thought it was some kind of human/photographers intervention, it's good to know it's natural and hard to explain Nature is amazing!
