I guess it's because animals' ears go floppy/to the side when they're scared or feeling dejected...or maybe floppiness is just adorable. My friend has pet dumbo rats, their ears are big and flappy and further down the side of their heads than on normal rats, and it makes them look really cute and kind of dopey.

Eeeeee...I want to tickle his ears now and see what happens.
