Description

WSC- POPEYE - Sat-Sun Jan. 19-20, 2019

POPEYE the SAILOR just hit 90 years old this week and was created by Elzie Crisler Segar for the daily King Features comic strip, Thimble Theatre, and first appeared in it in January of 1929. Years later, due to his popularity, the strip was renamed POPEYE. The character has appeared in theatrical and television animated cartoons. Popeye is a one-eyed sailor who gains his strength via spinach (before 1932, it was by rubbing the head of a Whiffle Hen). In the strips, Swee’Pea is Popeye’s ward, but in the cartoons, the child belongs to Olive Oyl. Popeye’s nemesis is usually Bluto, a brutish bully who is in constant pursuit of Olive Oyl.

Today you are challenged to draw POPEYE for about a half hour!

The deadline for this challenge is Monday 21 January 2019!

Wow!!!  That is so cool!  I remember being young and watching Popeye cartoons.  I think Fleisher did some of them.

The Fleischer Brothers started doing the original cartoons in 1932 until Famous Artists took over in 1942.
They continued to get made until 1957.
E.C. Segar started the Thimble Theater comic strip in 1919.
In 1929 he started the storyline that would introduce Popeye. He was originally meant
to be a temporary character for the duration of that story, but the rest, as they, is history!
I've got all the reprints of the original story line and what came after. (newspaper strips)

Funny how as a kid you just never know why you like things.  I was huge on the early popeyes(not as much on the later stuff)  Loved Superman and of course Felix the Cat.  All Fleisher LOL.  I guess even then quality meant something to me.  The Superman's still are gorgeous today.

Btw you are lucky on that Popeye Collection!

I can't wait to take it out of its' packaging (and making it non-mint in the process) and taking it over to Red Hook to take loads of photos!
