Description
“Rose, Rose, Rose Red,
Will I ever see thee wed?
I will marry at thy will, sire,
At thy will.
A thousand years gone by,
Too late to wonder why
I’m here alone.
If in my darkest hour
She rose that fell a flower
I should have known.
Rose, Rose, Rose Red,
Will I ever see thee wed?
Only if you can capture me!
Tell me no more stories
And I’ll tell you no lies.
No one wants to hurt me
But everybody tries.
And if you think that I’ve been waiting
For my planets to align,
It’s time you go on:
Get your things, get up, get out,
I’m doing fine, yeah, yeah!
Someday these walls will speak,
The floors beneath you creek
To call my name.
Here in my web of dreams
My whispers turn to screams
And place the blame.
Rose, Rose, Rose Red,
Will I ever see thee wed?
Only if you discover me.
Tell me no more stories
And I’ll tell you no lies.
No one wants to hurt me
But everybody tries.
And if you think that I’ve been waiting
For my planets to align,
It’s time you go on:
Get your things, get up, get out,
I’m doing fine, yeah, yeah!
For this freedom
I have given all I had.
For this darkness
I gave my light.
For this wisdom
I have lost my innocence.
Take my petals
And cover me with the night.
Tell me no more stories
And I’ll tell you no lies.
No one wants to hurt me
But everybody tries.
And if you think that I’ve been waiting
For my planets to align,
It’s time you go on:
Get your things, get up, get out,
Get up, get out,
I’m doing fine!”
[ Rose Red – Emilie Autumn ]
Also known as “that photo in which there are more bobby pins than soul”.
Rose Red is my favourite Emilie Autumn song and another one I’ve always approached with reverence in terms of providing a visual rendition. I love the music and I relate to the lyrics a lot. I did take inspiration from it before , long ago, but similarly to Saturnine , I never quite settled on a “definitive” photo to try and convey the song as a whole. I mentioned Saturnine because the creative process behind Rose Red turned out to be quite similar to that one: the song came back to haunt me in full force when I used it for an Instagram song challenge during lockdown, I started mulling over it, and then the idea struck when I saw those rose hips one afternoon, inspirind me with a rather simple portrait with a visual clue to the title. I liked the idea of a crow of rose hips instead of blossoms because it felt somewhat lesse expected – and it was also a callback to that photo from 2009. I also included both my rose-themed rings for aesthetics, as well as a subtle digitally drawn Solar System model to reference that line from the lyrics which I love.
Also, I have to give the biggest thank you to my mother for helping me make and pin in place the crown: I wouldn't have managed on my own.
On a side note, wearing the crown of rose hips totally felt like being the King of the Reach. So yeah, I think this might double as an oblique reference to House Gardener Tyrell.
