While, yes, his lifelong solitude would be boring, he seemed pretty happy returning to it at the end of SA1.Β Even in SA2, he was involved in yet another master emerald-based quest that just happened to collide with Sonic, Tails and Amy (Actually....does Sonic even HAVE any friends that have any business working with him aside from Tails and Amy?Β Cream had her mom kidnapped that one time and then appears on-again off-again tagging along with Amy, Shadow and Rouge are eternally preoccupied with their own agenda, the writers don't seem to know what to do with the Chaotix, and all the plot-centric characters tend to never be seen or mentioned again....), but Knuckles was still mostly roped in.
Knux seemed to start hanging out with Sonic and doing everything with them in Sonic Heroes.Β And Heroes' plot was basically a bunch of stuff thrown at us with no real explanation or context. (I mean, really?Β Nobody is going to take a moment to explain why Shadow is alive?Β And if its revealed in the next game that Shadow lost his memories, then why does he know Sonic and co.?) And since that game, the OFFICIAL answer to why Knuckles hangs around these people is:

Well, its more like the writers ditched that role for him.Β The argument could be made that the writers just wore out the whole "Knuckles guards the Master Emerald" plotline, but they know that Knuckles is a popular character, so they just ignored it and hoped nobody asked too many questions.Β Which might be an okay argument if not for the following things:
0-I'm not saying its the only thing Knuckles had going for him, but the Master Emerald is like, well, like Maria was for Shadow.Β Its something that was central to their backstory and its not really cool to just brush it off without there being some kind of event.Β Otherwise there's just the big void that fans try to close with pointless speculation on what the heck ever happened to it that goes round and round in circles for all of eternity.Β (On that note, the game "Shadow the Hedgehog" had one disappointing factor above any others people can talk about:Β They never told us what exactly happened on the ARK that night and why Shadow had two conflicting and contradictory memories of the promise he made to Maria.)
1-There's too many recurring characters anyway.Β Shadow being absent from Unleashed and Colors was a GOOD thing.Β If you can't work the M.E. or something relevant to Knuckles into the plot at hand (or its a plot where Knuckles is actually Sir Gawain), then don't shoehorn him in!
2-Actually, with the rate at which the Chaos Emeralds are used as a McGuffin in the plot, the Master Emerald could replace them as the central plot device (I mean, there's Chaos, the Eclipse Cannon, Super Sonic, Shadow's ...memories?, Time Travel, and the Gaia Shrines that all require the Chaos Emerald, but only Mecha Sonic and that one Giant Robot from S&K that uses the M.E.?).Β In fact, both of the Adventure games make it clear that the M.E. is pretty obviously connected.
3-Archie Comics has been doing stuff with Knux's character for years now!Β Okay, maybe you can't completely copy-paste from the comics, but there's got to be something to show the generalized potential of Knuckles and the other characters that you could take to the next video game.

Hehe, I have to agree, being with that emerald can suck the life out of you, so they're the only people he's got, wether he likes it or not. XD
