Description The Kingdom of Navarre, originally the Kingdom of Pamplona was founded when the Basque chieftain Íñigo Arista (r. AD 824-852) was declared King and led a revolt against the regional Frankish authority. It extended primarily along both sides of the western Pyrenees bordering the Atlantic, straddling the Bay of Biscay.

The coat of arms has its origins in a legend dating back to 1212 at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, wherein the cavalry of King Sancho VII the Strong broke the chains of the Almohad calpih's slave-soldiers and captured an emerald, among other prizes of war.
The ikurrina flag symbolizes the Biscayan people (red field), the Oak of Guernica, a symbol of the old laws of Biscay (green saltire), and the Roman Catholic faith (white cross).
The arrano beltza ("black eagle") was originally the seal of Sancho VII, and has become a common symbol of modern Basque nationalism.

In 1512 the southern half of the kingdom was conquered by the Crown of Castile, and thereafter integrated into the Kingdom of Spain, becoming a province in 1841. The north remained independent, but was joined with France by personal union in 1589, when King Henry III of Navarre succeeded to the French throne as Henri IV (hence the Bourbon Legion of Honor). In 1610 it was merged with the Kingdom of France, and its rulers used the title "King of France and Navarre" for its duration until 1830.

I wish I had a coat of arms like that for my Nationstates country (www.nationstates.net/nation=ce… ) without the helmet, but with its flags arranged behind the shield and its eagle on the shield.
