Description
With the beginning of the Franco Prussian War of 1870, the Empire of Italy sought for revenge against the treachery of Napoleon III during the War of Unification.
Victor Emmanuel declared war on the Second French Empire in Prussia's defense shortly after its first istances.
However, when the Italian Imperial Army was ordered to the Papal States in Latium after the Battle of Sedan, Francis II refused to send the Army of the Two Sicilies, and threatened to secede from Italy.
This prompted the War of Six Weeks, during which the Piedmontese Army fought against Bourbonist loyalists in the territory of Naples, with Sicily revolting against Francis. Ferdinand, Duke of Genoa, disembarked there with Garibaldi and took over vital centres such as Palermo, Catania and Syracuse. The final act of the War of Six Weeks was the Siege of Gaeta, during which Francis II was forced to surrender against Cialdini's naval bombardment.
Francis II was deposed, and exiled, alongside his brother, Luigi, which commanded the loyalist troops. Gen. Filangieri vouched for the Bourbons, which were not ousted as the ruling family of Naples.
With the Treaty of Porto San Stefano Naples and Sicily were divided once again, and Sicily became an independent entity anew, under the Savoy-Genoa branch.
Naples was restored to the rather annoyed Alfonso of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, barely thirty years old, retaining various ducal titles in Sicily proper (like Catania or Syracuse), and under the clause of conceding a Constitution.
Alfonso was crowned Alfonso III of Naples, following the old enumeration, and had to change his dynasty's name to Bourbon-Naples, being forbidden to display the arms of Sicily in his emblem (although the Arms of Aragon were retained).
