Description San Diego Comic Con 2011

Last year I did the Thor piece while sitting and working in between commissions in Artist's Alley. Like that piece, the challenge was do a dynamic image with no reference and render the hell out of it.

Original 9 x 14" on art board; Copic markers (warm and cool grays).

This is possibly one of the most fantastic pieces of artwork I have ever seen.

How do you get the grays to pop like that? My scans always look so drab.

Michael, sadly this was scanned in the Kinko's at SDCC 2011, and this was the best they could deliver. The original had even more "pop." A lot of mid-tone is lost (especially in Cap's face).

Truthfully, since I was making up the lighting as I went along, I really layered on the deep darker gray tones to generate as much depth as possible. I think it also tends to jump since I hit the background with only black, making the areas of white jump even more. It was a happy experiment.

The previous SDCC I had done a Thor piece [link] . Not sure what I'll do this Con. Something as practice like this in between commissions.

Thanks for stopping by.

Either way, it looks great. I might try scanning some of my stuff at a place like Kinko's before I sell them at conventions.

I just started doing warm and gray markers recently and am getting the hang of it. Seeing your stuff is a definite inspiration.

Keep at it. I find it fun to do more rendering.

Stay in touch.
