Description This is a detail of this piece [link]

The entire piece is 24x36 inches approx.

Pen and ink, with gouache highlights, on hand made paper. I created the paper with timothy hay, abaca, and cotton. It is colored with tea and coffee and has inclusions on tea leaves. The nets are hand spun kozo paper which has been knitted.

This one took a really long time between the drawing and the nets...so I'm glad to finally have this one finished! Any feedback/questions are appreciated, as always thanks for looking.

Also, I will post a detail!!! Sorry in advance for the quality of the photo, I am getting a slide taken which promises higher quality. FULL VIEW PLEASE!!!

Lovely paper, i'd love to learn how to create my own paper from waste or such.

Cool idea!

Nice drawing style as well. You and larkin are partners in crime i think

Wow, the detail on that is really impressive and i love your technique of just using dots and short lines to give dinmension to the fish. The black and white kind of makes this piece look like a cave painting (just more amazing of course!) which works really well because we are always used to seeing fish in water and being drawn so, and if they are not drawn in water they are usually blue anyway, like the chinese fish paintnings.

Anyway, enough of this babble. This is a lovely peice of work and i would pay to have it on my wall.

xXx

this is extremely well-done... and super-wow for the making of paper; i only know the silly sort of thing back in 6th grade with ripped up construction paper, glue, and water and they called it 'making paper' heh. eh. anyhow. i love the personality you've given the fish. the style of this entire piece is just plain beautiful.

impressive. +fave!

This is just *amazing*! Such beauty in everything - the fish *and* all the background. Your paper is all wonderful - it looks so textured, and it always comes out a lovely colour. *And* it seems to work beautifully with ink. I'm just interested because a lot of home-made paper I've used either blots with ink or won't lay ink down properly on it ...

Once again, sorry to get back to you so late. I use watered down acrylic matte medium over the surface of the finished paper to reduce absorbancy and to smooth down any fluffy bits.
I also use metyl cellulose, which does a similar function, in the creation of the paper.
Thanks for you lovely comments!!!

Thanks again. It was really hard to photograph the entire thing...now that I have the detail shot, I wish I would have just made a GIANT picture of just gold fish.

LOL!!! I did fall in love with the goldfish, but the piece is still put together very well and would not be the same if not for its entirety!!

Thanks! I've been working on combining different elements in my work. Some are more successful than others, but what great art isn't trail and error?

Grace, that is an outstanding piece of work. I kind of want to see some hint of a net drawn over the paper, but it's not a suggestion, rather it's just where my mind starts filling in the blank spaces. This is really quite beautiful and I'm very impressed how you've expressed emotion and community in the work.

This is beautiful - i love how the delicacy of the drawing contrasts with the roughness of the handmade paper it gives the whole piece such an amazing quality.

In one of my few painted etchings, I did the same thing. It does make the stuff look just superbly better.

I'm working on getting that John Wolseley DVD to you, our burner died just after I made you the offer and we only just got a new one, so it won't be far off! Then after I've sent it, I will take you up on the offer of some of your paper...do you have any with the ocen/seaweed in it left? Cos I'd love to use it now I'm living on the coast to draw little tidal discoveries that I'm making and the rare seabirds and creatures I work with. I'm planning on using one weekend day a week to draw, too. Good on you, I'm so glad you haven't given it up while you're working. I was so rapt to see 4 devaitions from you in my watch the other day.

Oh thats fine. I know you have busy lately. It's very nice of you to send me the DVD so I don't mind waiting.
Yes, I do have some of that seaweed paper left. I haven't used it as I've been working on scraps of really old paper/new paper I've made recently. So I'll send you some of that!
Alot of my larger projects are finally getting finished...I've spent a lot time developing things but not a lot of time finshing them!

Hiya! The DVD is on its way and thankyou so much for the paper; I may have to send you a note with my new address as I've moved since I last gave it you. I can't wait to use your paper, it will add a whole new element to my work, and what I have in mind is very much inspired by your own work . I have met this amazing woman who makes baskets very much in the traditional indigenous (Aboriginal) style, using local plant fibres and native plant materials as decorations, you'd love her work, they remind me of birds nests. She is going to teach me to make them and when I have one worth showing, I'll post it on dA. I am happy for you that your works are getting finished (sigh) it must be a good feeling. I can't even get the time to start any....
By the way, let me know when you get the DVD if it works (it should) as it will be burnt and I hope compatible with your system. I really hope you get something out of it. Aren't Exquisit corpses cool? Are you doing any? I have lined one up with a guy called avsky from Melbourne, his work is awesome! But we are both busy at the moment

I got your note, and I will let you know when I get the DVD.

Actually I am doing one with :larkin_art:...we're working on a zine together and we're going to print then in it!

I can't wait to see what you're going to make with my paper!!!
