Chapter 1: A Questionable Mission
Have you ever woke up and thought "Today is a perfect day and nothing could ever go wrong"? Funny enough, almost a month ago, I had one of those days and boy was I wrong. Usually, when I wake up in the mornings I start with some grooming and whatnot. This is followed by some cleaning and the average straightening out before I headed out to enjoy the day. I live not too far from the Guild, just east of the crossroad in a wooded area that is much cooler than the mainland. Originally, before I started living there, I used to live on an Island called "Blizzard Island" where snow never melts and it's cold year-round so you can see why I like cold areas.
......Lopunnies don't live there?
Yes I know, I was the only one of my "kind" living there, but how? Well, My foster mother lives there, she took care of me, etc, etc. I'll explain that later.
The reason why that day went from being so "perfect" to completely questionable comes from the sudden request of me to head to the Guild. Normally, this isn't an issue. Pokemon from my team are summoned all the time to join in a mission. In fact, my members will sometimes summon me to help with a difficult mission, but it was who that summoned me that surprised me: Miya and Pumpkin.
I know I mentioned this before, but Miya and Pumpkin were the previous leaders and I have to say, they were the perfect leaders. From the day I joined their team, they allowed me to accompany them on almost every mission until the day we saved the world. For a couple of months after the world was saved, things were...pretty gloomy. Pumpkin was gone, Miya was always sad and crying, and it felt like our team was falling apart until he returned...but even THAT was short-lived. After those two got married, they started traveling alone with each other (Which I totally understood, don't get me wrong), leading to me being "not needed" on their travels. it turned out that they were being tested to see if they qualified to become the new Guildmasters. After earned that role, I became the new leader. Although I was excited, I was also still disappointed about them not calling me as often as they used to, but it was fine.
...You're saying you still don't get why that day was questionable?
Heh, easy. It had been almost 3 months since they called me to do something with them! I know what you're thinking, "Why didn't you just go over to the guild and ask them?" Well here's some news to you, buddy: I did.
Yeah, Yeah, I know. I could've just picked a mission, grabbed some team members, and went on a mission, but it's not the same. I wanted to do something with Pumpkin and Miya again, ya know? Something we used to do back when they were the leaders and we had a purpose in life...a purpose we no longer had...
Anyways, after using my badge to teleport to the area I was summoned, I was met with a familiar face: A Shinx named "Token". Token is one of the Senior Recruits of the Guild and often do small tasks for Miya and Pumpkin. According to him, Pumpkin and Miya had summoned me to the Guild and nothing more. Yeah, it was odd, but I wasn't to complain about it. All that was going through my head was the possibility of going on a mission with them. Outside of that, I just found it strange that Token summoned me outside the Guild rather than in.
I was surprised that the outside tent was the same, sporting a cute Wigglytuff Tent-like design that served as the structure. inside, everything else was also the same. The Mission board was still there, Outlaw bulletin boards were still there, but with the addition of posters of outlaws who have made a name for themselves. Don't get me wrong, they must've made a name for themselves in the worse possible way and probably uncatchable. One of them in particular that stood out was "Green" the Decidueye. According to the poster, he made his way to this world via. "World Portal" and is said to be wanted in a few other worlds.
...ok, I see that look you're giving me. I will explain what a "World Portal" is too but hear me out: Green was wanted for looting many valuable items from other Pokemon, even Exploration Teams, but for his bounty to be "1,000,000 ", he had to have done something terrible.
Making my down the stairs, it was then I had realized things changed. Besides the renovated kitchen and bigger Guildmaster's Room, there was also a new porch installed in place of the back wall (a nice touch), chairs and tables I wish we had years ago, and a new Supplier/Expedition bulletin board.
In front of the Guildmaster's Room stood Miya and Pumpkin having a deep conversation about some artifact. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious or excited out of my mind. It was what I had been waiting for; a new mission
"---I've never heard of an artifact like it. Imagine, what if---OH! Zero!" Miya exclaimed as her serious expression softened. Pumpkin, on the other hand, seemed like he was troubled, but after seeing me enter the room, they both ran over to me and gave me a hug.
"I'm so glad you're here! I'm sorry we haven't had time to contact you or any of the other members lately. Our work here has been quite busy since the new World Portals opened up, especially with all the new Pokemon and Exploration Teams coming in...
Hearing the way she said that and with Pumpkin looking off to the side, I could tell they were feeling guilty about it. As disappointed as I was, I couldn't be mad at them. After all, they were the new Guildmasters and that's a serious thing.
"It's alright you guys," I said giving them a smile, "I can tell you guys have been very busy. Just a heads-up would've been nice."
"Yeah, we gotta get better with that..." Pumpkin said smiling with a look of embarrassment on his face.
"So, what's up?"
"Well..." scratching her head, she looked around nervously, which wasn't like her. "The reason why we called you here is because of the rumors of an artifact existing in a location that has not been fully explored yet...and---"
As her voice trails off a bit, she takes a quick look at Pumpkin to which he nods to her, signaling to continue.
"---the location of this place is through an unknown path that happens to run right through Blizzard Island, near Cider Hill...and we would like you to check it out for us."
"Wait, My Hometown?" I said with a puzzled look on my face.
"Yes? is that a problem?" She asked, giving me a confused looked.
I have to admit, I paused for quite a long time, trying to process what they just told me. The main reason for that was the fact that it happened to be on Blizzard Island. Yeah, I should've been excited about that, but I was also uneasy because I haven't seen my foster mother in a long time.
"Okay, Let me get this straight, you called me here because of a "rumor" of an artifact that is located in uncharted territory, near my hometown...and you want me to go check it out?
"Something like that," Pumpkin said somewhat agreeing on what I said.
At first, I wanted to turn down the offer because it sounded like an errand or something you would expect a guild member to do, especially for training, but after thinking about it, I thought it was best to ask a few questions.
"So this artifact, what is it? what does it do?" I asked, groom one of my long ears as I leaned against the wall of the room.
"The artifact is said to have been sealed away by a powerful Pokemon and if a Pokemon with a strong heart happens to obtain the artifact, it is said it will grant them a powerful ability. From what we heard, that ability could even exceed Pumpkin's ability to see the past and the future." Miya responded. "However, we don't know what this 'ability' is. For all we know, it could be a joke made by some of the locals or members. We're just afraid that it could be true. It's best we get it first before anyone else catches wind of it."
The thought of an artifact that gives a powerful ability sounded interesting, but the fact that it was dangerous enough for Pumpkin and Miya to be concerned about it was a problem. Outside of that, there was one more question I had for them...
"Ok, but are you guys coming with me?" I asked to which they both gave me a horribly flustered look.
"I, uh...W-We thought it was best for you to go alone since Miya and I have the guild to run and you know that area better than anyone else here. Honestly, we recommend it."
"I should've figured that..." I said sighing and shaking my head, "Why not send some of the guild members who are also native to Blizzard Island to at least check the area out?"
"Funny enough, we already tried that," Miya said, watching a few of the members going by. The guild members that caught her attention were Elite Members recruited by Miya and Pumpkin right after they became the new Guildmasters. Out of the duo team named "Team Shy", One of them was named "Aura" the Mew and the other was "Chikky" the Shy Chikorita who looked different from Miya or any other Chikorita. I could understand why she was looking at them since even though they weren't native to Blizzard Island, they knew the place very well. I suspected she sent them there because they were both bandaged up.
"After sending some of our best recruits, they came back injured saying that there was a Pokemon blocking the path, cloaking itself with the Hail that was falling. It was already bad enough that some were unable to even enter the area because of some barrier, but with that pokemon cloaking itself, they were unable to see it clearly."
After hearing all of that, it sounded like just the kind of adventure I've been waiting for...Just without them. If anything, I wished my Partner was there so we could do it together, but I told him he should take a vacation; he needed it.
...Who is my Partner?
Well, his name is "Queen" the Gardevoir, my best friend. I've known him for a long time and wouldn't know what to do without him...
...!!!
I---uh, heh heh, I'll put that on the list of things I need to explain. Let's just continue.
"By the way, Pumpkin, Miya, I know this is off-topic, but...why was I summoned outside the building rather than inside?" I said as I finished grooming one of my ears and starts grooming the other ear.
"I'm not sure..."Miya said, shaking her head as she looked at Pumpkin, who also shook his head. "We told Token to summon you, but I guess he went with what he was familiar with?"
"I guess so" I frowned. "Anyways, I'll do the mission. When do I start?"
Miya and Pumpkin smiles and both responded "Today!"
"T-Today?! So soon?" I said, almost getting one of my fingers tangled up in my Ear-tuff. It was well in the afternoon when they summoned me and I was not prepared for it.
"How about tomorrow? I would need to at least head to town and get the supplies I need for the trip."
Hearing that, Miya frowned, but Pumpkin nodded and said "Tomorrow is fine. Just be sure to head out early, alright? This would at least put you ahead of anyone who might've caught wind of it"
"Sounds good to me," I said as I finished grooming the other ear. "I'll get started on gathering some supplies now."
After letting out a sigh, Miya smiled then nods in acceptance. They both wave as Token escorted me back out to the crossroads on his own accord, which was highly unnecessary. However, after making it to the crossroads, Token then looks at me and says in a low, but soft voice, "Be careful, alright?"
Hearing this, I grabbed hold of him before he could leave and said "Wait, what do you mean by 'Be careful' and why did you summon me outside of the guild?"
He then gave me a worried look and responded, "I was planning on telling you something earlier after overhearing why Miya and Pumpkin wanted me to summon you, but I knew It was best for the Guildmasters to tell you about it. I was one of the members who went out there. That Pokemon that attacked us is very elusive," He said showing me some of his injuries. "My partner and I used every attack we knew, but it wasn't enough to stop it."
From what I knew, Token doesn't speak much, but after hearing him out I knew I needed to be prepared.
I then let go of his paw and he nods to me before walking back to the guild, making his way in.
