Back in the day it was captain, chief officer, 1st officer, second, etc. so Murdock was 1st Officer so he should have only 2 rank stripes. While Murdock had on 3 stripes in one picture that doesn’t mean he kept them through the voyage. It would be confusing since echief Officer Wilde is aboard and he has 3 stripesΒ

This was drawn years ago and I'm struggling to remember if I found a rank chart, I think I did...

Since you're here, do you have any information or photos of what the regular sailors wore?

well it would probably be similar to what the 1910's version of an Royal Navy sailor uniforms. if they hand some ranks insignia I have no idea. I saw something in the titanic movie but that was just a movie. although it did get Murdoch's rank insignia right.

Uh, if my memory still serves, was he the guy who saluted then shot himself in the 1997 movie?

Awesome work...only thing wrong is the insignia. Captain had four stripes, Chief Officer had three, 1st Officer had two, 2nd through 5th had one.

"It is interesting to note that this photograph reveals that Lightoller is apparently still wearing his first officer's stripes (two stripes), which would also indicate although not clearly seen in the image that Murdoch would be wearing his Chief Officer's stripes (three stripes). It leads to the very real possibility that although their ranks had changed due to the last minute deck department reshuffle, their uniforms had not, which would explain later confusions involving Murdoch still being called the 'chief officer'." Enlarge the pic...it's not a photograph at all. It's a drawing.

There's a link at the bottom of my comment, it's a photo of the real Titanic officers right before they closed an entrance door in 1912.

Parts of it that broke off and landed on the deck which some people played socc---football with, not the full size one that could be a mile deep, who knows.
