Description A few page snaps from the book I've been working on.
(click image for a little bit bigger)

Again, odd spacing is due to text, sticker positions and bleed/gutter for printing.

I'd loved to have spent more time on them, but deadlines don't allow

Hope you like 'em anyway

Just seen the pdf pages with all text etc, and it looks quite nice all together

Ok, just had a look.
It's nearly there actually. What brush opacity did you have?
It looks pretty hard (almost 100%)
Try to use lower opacity, and more brush strokes to build up the shades/highlights. I set my brush usually to about 15-20% opacity

I also do areas of my highlights/shades on their own layer, eg the nose, so I can erase any bits I don't like, without effecting the rest of the airbrushing on the face

I should be kinda used to it by now really, as I've done loads of jobs that have been published in books etc (that sounded kinda big headed then didn't it )
But actually I still get a really strange feeling when I see my stuff in the shops.

I can't explain it but it's kinda like... What the?? I did that at home, and now it's sitting here in a shop

Think the biggest buzz I got was when I did Spider-man, Pokemon and a Mac & Lauren annual covers around 2004. I was in the shop browsing, and a little kid ran up and picked up the annuals I'd done while shouting to his mum "I want these ones!"

Was such a great feeling seeing the look on the kids face
Makes me enjoy doing these pics even more

Can you please tell me which software you used? Are the characters done in Vector or in Pixels? I'm assuming the background was done in PS but I always tried to create that painting effect on the characters.
Thanks in advance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandMaster-J5 In reply to LPDisney [2011-09-23 22:33:56 +0000 UTC]

Hiya, that depends, on what I get in return for sharing my secrets!?!

No, no probs.
I'm going to make a tutorial for the characters, showing what I do with them after the pencil stage, and how....

But, for now you'll have to just deal with a huge wall of text!!

I line the characters in Illustrator as it gives the smoothest results, and is quicker/cleaner than inking buy hand.
I also made a custom brush to ink with. The ink brushes that come with Illustrator are REALLY hit and miss, and tend to do very strange things.

(This tapered line syle can also be done in photoshop, using the pen tool and choosing simualate pressure, but you have a bit more freedom in Illustrator as you can still adjust the line in real time if something looks off)

The thick and thin line style also helps for flat colour images, as it adds a feeling of weight, depth and flow to the characters

(Just reading this back, and I really am trying to seem like I know what I'm talking about )

All colouring is done in Photoshop using a soft edge brush, with opactiy that changes anywhere between 8, and 100% (normally around 15-20% though.

Hope that's more helpfull than it is confusing :stupidme
I'll let you know when I've done the tutorial though, as there are a few other people that are interested too

LPDisney In reply to GrandMaster-J5 [2011-09-24 11:47:30 +0000 UTC]

(Thank you very much for the thorough reply ^.^)
hhmmmm I see... I suspected as much. The lines do look like they were done in a Vector software, but the coloring looks too complex for a vector software to handle, and so it makes sense that you do it in PS. I really hate drawing in illustrator, mainly cause in PS I can rotate the canvas as I work (just like with a lightbox) while in illustrator they didn't add that feature for some reason... urg.
So you just use a brush? you don't mark areas with the lasso and add feather and fill it in? (that's the closest I could get to reach this effect). Interesting.
YES! a Tutorial would be great awesome wonderful! I just added you to my watch list so I will be notified once you post it

As for "what I get in return for sharing my secrets!?!" well... I can offer you a fruit basket... or... I can tell you one of my secrets, including universe/life related n_____n . Deal?

well, I don't know how much of a tutorial it really is. It's hard to make without being a video, and has a LOT of text in it
But, it's up now if you wnt to have a look
