Background/History: Akihiro Matsui was born in Brazil and spent his childhood there. He learned how to dance the samba, play the hand drum, cook Brazilian and Japanese cuisine, compose music, and even practice capoeira the Brazilian martial art. His parents had moved to Brazil for the country’s incredible economic growth during the 2000s in contrast to the stagnant Japan. Unfortunately, the country’s economic recession and surge in crime convinced them to return to Japan. Akihiro was reluctant to lose his Brazilian friends; but accompanied his parents when they returned 4 years ago. He completed his high school in Sapporo, in the far colder climate of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Akihiro faced some prejudice for his Brazilian-accent Japanese and mixed race; but earned far more favorability due to his exotic background and cultural talents. His rival in high school and now college is Kiyoshi Tokushima, an arrogant chauvinist.

His family ancestry is Japanese, but some of his ancestors were immigrants who left Japan to go to Brazil in the 1930s; but returned to Japan during the boom times of the 1980s. While his genealogy will show all Japanese, another family member married a Brazilian of mixed ancestry. That family also came to Japan. That is the aunt that owns the restaurant. It specializes in Brazilian food and features capoeira shows as entertainment. It caters to the Brazilian Japanese; but is also in the mainstream. Sometimes Akihiro is part of the capoeira show. More often Akihiro is waiting tables or playing music for the show. He’s quite capable in the kitchen and can be there if needed as well.

Personality/Motivation: Akihiro is a friendly guy, always helpful. He is full of energy and happy to lend a hand or a hug to anyone who might need it. He knows that he is only one person and seeks to be an artist (through music, cooking and dance) because that would allow him to reach out to more people that he can do physically himself.

Appearance: Akihiro is about 5’9” with a slender, athletic build. Like most Japanese, he has brown eyes and straight black hair. He does have some Brazilian ancestry (a mix of races and cultures like half of the country’s population), so his skin and facial features are different than his peers. He is also very animated – almost to the point of hyperactive and moves like a dancer. And he is insistently friendly.

Picking up the scepter from Aunt Beatrix transforms Akihiro into a glamorous figure wearing a majestic costume. The specifics of the transformation effect is up to the player as to whether or not you want Akihiro to turn into a “magical boy” or “magical girl.”

Secret: Akihiro’s Aunt Beatriz saw a shooting star when she was about Akihiro’s age- but this star was not ordinary. This star bathed her in its light, bestowing her with a golden scepter that gives her magical powers. She became a “magical girl” superheroine in Brazil and Japan, but her exploits were covered up. Due to her advanced age, she must pass along her powers to a worthy candidate.
