Well, it depends on your definition of "see". I always imagined Storm Wing as being similar to Toph (Avatar: The Last Airbender). He can identify the shapes and forms of objects, but he can't see the colors or light intensity. So it's almost like he's severely colorblind!

From what i understand, the way it works for the two of them differs. Stormwing, as you said, can identify objects and shapes using magic, making him color blind in a way.
Toph is much different, in that she 'sees' things through her feet. Toph has mastered something called seismic sense, the ability to feel vibrations in the earth that allow her to visualize people's and object's shapes.
Both end up with a very similar end result, but with a few differences.
For one, Stormwing uses his magic, so he can 'see' pretty much any object or person, but only sees a vague shape. Toph on the other hand is limited to things that produce a vibration in the earth, meaning anything not connected to the ground, and anything obscured by another source will be invisible to her, although, she can make out much more detail of what she can see.
Second, Stormwing uses magic to 'see' through his eyes. So long as he has his magic, he can use the ability anywhere, and can see pretty much anything or anyone thats in his line of sight. Toph though, can only use her seismic sense when her bare feet are planted firmly on the ground, but due to how her ability works, she can see in every direction, and has no line of sight.
The final and biggest difference, is the fact that Stormwings ability is derived from his Pegasus magic, not one of his natural senses. Toph's Seismic Sense is a skill she learned through her other senses, meaning it allows her to do much more. Id go into detail, but i think ill just give you a link as this comment is getting quite long.

Hey, you're preaching to the choir here. I already get all the little differences. Anyone how takes the time to think things like this through (like myself, as I am quite the over-analyzer) could see all the little differences. I was only attempting to give a small comparison. Like you yourself said, "Both end up with a very similar end result..."
That's really what I was going for. I mean yeah, Stormwing's is derived from magic, whilst Toph's is derived from her natural senses (while arguably being enhanced by her bending), so obviously there will be many differences in their uses and capabilities. But they both provide the user with the ability to sense shapes and forms without seeing color. I could have used echolocation, which would have even more differences, to still make the same point.

Haha, I can understand that, and it is a good example. But Toph is one of my favorite characters, in or out of the show, I couldn't just let her be compared to jackpony stormwing without everyone knowing the details
Plus, i over think everything. Not only to the extent that i know these things, but to the extent that i end up having to make comments like that. Not sharing with the world the information that i get from all the thinking i do, would drive me insane. Not to mention the fact is fun having a serious conversation about something most people would overlook.

Well, now this begs the question: Who would win in a fight? Toph, or Storm Wing?

To be honest. Im not sure... Storm Wing being able to fly and all gives him a HUGE advantage, as Toph cannot see what is in the air, so i think the layout of the land would make the biggest effect on the outcome.
In an open area, Storm has the advantage, for the same reason above. But Toph can still find a way to keep him on the ground. In a tight, enclosed space, Storm would be forced to stay on the ground more often, and given Tophs Abilities, she would have a much bigger advantage.
In the end, Storm only needs to make one, direct hit to take toph down, But so long as she keeps him on the ground, her earthbending and precognition of movements would keep storm from landing that one blow.
From a Logic standpoint, i cant make a decision. But in terms of who's rooting for who, i have to go with Toph.

Honestly it wasn't until after I asked that I remembered "Oh yeah, Storm Wing can fly."
I think Toph's major drawback in this situation, other than his flight, is that I'm not sure she would be creative enough to keep him on the ground. While we've seen her do some creative things, like that metalbended suit she made that one time, we also know (from her words, no less) that earthbenders are very straightforward, and like to try to face things head-on. I think if she was able to think of a way to keep him grounded (like using earthbending to grab his hooves) then she would probably win.
In the end, it would be a short battle, but a very decisive one. Either Storm Wing lands a blow first, and wins, or Toph lands one first, and wins.
Or Toph could use her echolocation to see Storm Wing in the air... Oh wait.

Yeah, pretty much. If toph had a bit more control over her ability, she might be able to get a general idea of storms location in the air from his wing beats, but thats pushing it. And like i said, the environment would have a great impact. But in the end, your right, it'll come down to whoever makes the first blow.
This has inspired me to write something new just to live this idea out in my head.

Originally, Storm Wing was just going to be sitting there, looking regal. But then I thought "No, that doesn't feel right. It's too straightforward."
So, I decided to throw in some Firewall, because he makes everything better.
