Wow, this is your first original? I didn't even notice ^^ and I call myself an editor...for SHAME on me.

I think the best part of this is the coloring, the various shades of gold just feels like a christmas ornament. but it's not just the colors, the shading on the robe and the line art itself, the slight differences to stand out the object and detail lines give it a very organic flow that draws the eye to the important facts, letting the details support without distracting.

It's beautiful!! Awesome.

About angels and Supernatural...I just started season 5, and IMO...they really screwed up with the angels. They aren't portrayed as being much better than demons, it seems. O_o With the exception of Cas, of course. As someone who believes in angels as being powerful, yes, but also pure and righteous, I'm really annoyed with how they're portrayed in the show. With all that doubt, arrogance, cruelty and...jerkness. () Taking a few liberties to make them more relatable is one thing, but they made them downright unlikable. I'm seriously considering not watching it anymore, because of all that, but also now that my favorite character is a completely different person.

Aaaanyway... Sorry for taking my disgust out on you. o.o I only just watched the end of season 4 last night. >.> Feel free to ignore all that since it has nothing to do with your beautiful art.

haha, yeah! i pretty much had the same reaction as you at the beginning!!
it was all really... REALLY contradictory to the idea of angels i've had in my mind up till that point.
but then as the series went on more and more likeable angels are introduced and the reason why the show made the angels the way they were became more clear.
so keep watching!! maybe you'll start liking them too!! and in the meantime we can talk all about the show xD

I admit I probably wouldn't have stopped watching, despite considering it. XD It's kinda hard to stop. Also, I did have a smidge of hope that they'd somehow "redeem" themselves as far as their portrayal of angels is concerned, so I probably would have kept watching anyway. I'm glad to hear they do get a little better at least! I shall keep watching.

The other factor is still an issue though. Where did adorable, moral, kindhearted little Sammy go? :C At first it was like he just slowly faded away and changed and no one cared or noticed, but when Dean finally said something about it and showed concern, I felt vindicated. XD As it is though, Sam was definitely my favorite, but now...I actually prefer Dean. O.o I wouldn't have thought that possible in the first 2-3 seasons. XD

GraphiteDoll In reply to Myn-Anthony [2012-09-14 02:14:04 +0000 UTC]

lol!!! i liked Sammy in the beginning too, then i liked dean through the middle to current seasons! but i kind of like Sam again in season 7!!
i can't remember the earlier episodes clearly because all 7 seasons are running together in my mind, but i feel like up till when their father dies the entire story has been all about Sam. however from the episode where Dean was a dissembodied spirit on the verge of death, the show's perspective changed to focus on him more. But the story was still majorly Sammy's until dean comes back from the dead then, to me anyway, Dean kind of takes center stage.
...
which would explain why i liked Sam first, then Dean. Ahahaha...

i also like Cas throughout, but i don't know if it's cause i like him or i like the concept on him...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Myn-Anthony In reply to GraphiteDoll [2012-09-14 04:39:21 +0000 UTC]

For me, it's not who's in the center stage. I liked Sam for who he was; kindhearted, merciful, moral, more open to emotion in a way that made him strong... While Dean was cocky, concentrated on killing evil more than defending good, and hid his emotions like he was just too afraid to face them. Then, when Dean died, Sam started changing and didn't stop even when he got Dean back. He was slowly being...corrupted, for lack of a better word, by Ruby. He became far less merciful, moral and kindhearted... All the while, everything that happened to Dean began to change him as well. Only he changed for the better. He started learning to think more about the moral consequences, instead of running in, guns blazing. He also began to understand himself and his emotions more.

I guess I just like a certain type of person, which Sam was but isn't now (where I am in the series, anyway) and if anything, now Dean is more like that. XD Not exactly like how Sam was, but I feel like while Sam was being corrupted, Dean was growing as a person.

As for Cas...other than some of the unrealistic things they did with angels, I do like him. He's great.

Going for moral relativism isn't necessarily 'screwing up', though.

It's not how angels actually are. That's all I'm saying. It's not how they're ever portrayed. At very least, it completely goes against my idea of what an angel is, therefore they screwed up they're portrayal in my mind. I did say "in my opinion", in case you missed that.

"It's not how they're ever portrayed." I'm pretty sure at least some of the myriad of Bible and other religious stories depict angels as being detached and ruthless soldiers of God

Sorry, right. Yeah, I got the IMO part, it just didn't seem to offset the impression that you disliked the show because it didn't make the same creative decision you would have. I don't think them depicting the angels as universally good and caring would have added to the show or even been that realistic. I actually rather liked how they didn't stick to black-and-white characterisation of the different 'sides' (i.e. Heaven and Hell), but I can imagine that it would still be upsetting to someone attached to the idea of angels as benevolent protectors.

Don't get me wrong, I do see angels (especially Michael) as powerful and even fierce when necessary, possibly even seemingly detached from human emotion, but always for the glory of God. God is good, therefore angels can only do good. They're either for God or against Him, and if they're against Him they're called demons. There's plenty of room for action-packed drama with that, especially with the doubt and imperfect perspective of the human characters. The problem is that not only are the angels of the show detached and fierce, they're also shown as being heartless and showing arrogance and even jealousy toward humanity. And doubt. With angels, there's no such thing as doubt. It's one thing to tweak them to make them more human, it's another to change them so much that they might as well be completely separate entities.

Also, I never said I dislike the show, just how they portrayed the angels.

As for being "attached to an idea"...it's not so much that as it is knowing what I believe to be facts about creatures that actually exist. The way I see it...even if a lot of people doubt their existence, a great number of people don't. Therefore, I would hope the writers wouldn't change them in such an unlikeable way, especially with specific angels. I honestly see it as disrespectful. I certainly don't think that's their intent, but the end result nonetheless.

Hm, yes, but the entire first bit relies on the premise that God is good, which is a debate people have been having since likely the dawn of time. It's not like there's a 'fandom consensus' on this one, or like there's a 'canon' to disrespect, if you get my meaning. XD

Still, I understand what you mean, and it's been very interesting talking to you.

May I ask where the 'creatures that actually exist' bit came from? It's pretty commonplace for people to believe in some kind of higher entity, but accepting the smaller details of the story, like the existence of angels, is something I don't often encounter.

Myn-Anthony In reply to Kaytara [2012-09-14 20:38:20 +0000 UTC]

You don't encounter people who believe everything in the Bible? Angels are mentioned many, many times in the Bible. If you believe in God, and believe that the Bible is the word of God, then you have to believe in angels. And since Christianity is one of the largest religions on the planet, that means billions of people believe that God exists and is good, and believe in angels.

And actually, there is a canon to disrespect. The Bible is that canon. If a fictional novel or story (Star Wars, for example) can have canon (Darth Vader being Luke's father being obvious canon), then of course a major religious text which billions of people believe in as fact could be classified as canon. Even in cases where there are different interpretations, specific churches (the Catholic church, for example) have agreed on certain canons. The fact that God is good is one of them. Another is that angels exist and who and what they are. If Darth Vader being Luke's father is canon in the Stars Wars story, then the righteousness of God and the existence and role of angels is absolutely canon in the Bible and in specific churches.

As for this debate on whether God is good, as far as the people who actually believe He exists go, the vast majority know Him as good. And not only in Christianity. The debate is very small in comparison.

Er, no, I don't generally encounter people who believe everything in the Bible. Believing in all of them, literally, would involve rejecting pretty much all modern science (the Earth being only several thousand years old, for example, would imply that the theory of radioactivity is not actually understood, even though we've been using it for decades to get good results in various applications). So no, I don't think I've ever run into someone with that stance.

How many people believe in something doesn't determine whether it's canon, though. If more people, say, ship Destiel than there are those who don't, it doesn't make it automatically canon within the story's context - whether it's canon is usually for some higher authority to decide that has been involved with the story's creation. So, barring God swooping down to declare what the canon is, at most you can have the leaders of the religious society, e.g. the Pope, decide what it is. But that doesn't change the fact that historically, the canon has been anything but consistent - God being seen as good, benevolent and full of forgiveness has only been "in" roughly as the result of the Restoration movement and Martin Luther.

Myn-Anthony In reply to Kaytara [2012-09-15 03:14:21 +0000 UTC]

Nothing in the Bible contradicts science. It's a common misconception fueled by certain Christians who interpreted it in their own way. It's one thing to interpret something that isn't specific, it's another to ignore facts that are clearly written out. Nowhere in the Bible does it say the earth is only several thousand years old. It does, however, clearly speak of angels, even naming a few. One can't call themselves Christian and not accept what's clearly stated as fact in the Bible. God is good, Jesus is the Son of God, angels exist. These things no Christian would deny.

God did swoop down and name the canon. It's called: the Bible. The written Word of God. In which there are clear facts. One being the existence of angels as beings completely loyal to God.

My point wasn't to define the word "canon" and what is and isn't canon anyway, my point was that the writers disrespect the specific angels mentioned in the Bible, as well as everyone who believes in and admire these angels. They twisted the common perception of angels from something pure and holy to something unlikeable and disrespectful to humanity and even God.
