Class History

Virtually no one outside of Ashlain saw the Tulioc Class coming, and fewer still realized it was an entirely new class of vessels built using the parts and components from the unbuilt members of the county class with considerable modification. The end result is a vessel of greater capacity than expected. Overall the Tulioc class by simply existing reinforces the fact that the Ashlain navy despite being geared towards defense on paper may very well be equally capable of offense at a moment’s notice.  Given the aforementioned it is easy to forget that the very nature of the Tulioc class is deception, it was designed and built under a state of deception, and this extends to its appearance which resembles the older County class so much that casual observers would not know the difference. As an interesting historical footnote the first operational member of this class; KAS – Ashlain [OV-26] was the flag ship for the Ashlain delegation’s visit to the 70th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Kharkov state. The curious differences between the then un-upgraded County class and the comparatively massive Tulioc class drew curiosity and inevitably a guided tour of the vessel was granted to Kharkov statesmen and Military officials. This event would lead to an interest by the Karkov Navy in acquiring several of the Tulioc class and later on several upgraded County class.

Despite the origins of the Tulioc class, the vessel as seen is a top-notch warship, delivering exceptional protection and firepower in a cost-effective package that the navy as a whole is quite happy with. Critics of the design still point to the fact it is still using 16” guns when 18” guns are available, and that the Tulioc’s top speed (26.25 kn) is too slow to keep up with fast battleships. Advocates of the design often counter with the fact that the larger 18” guns would cause exceptional vibration and tend to disrupt radar range finders and the eighteen 16” guns produce a greater volume of more accurate fire at a more reasonable engagement range than the 18” guns used on the upgraded county class. Additionally Ashlain Naval Doctrine does not call for high speed chases across the open ocean and the Tulioc simply isn’t designed with that role in mind.
On its own the Tulioc is a worthy successor to the County class in that it advances and capitalizes on the advanced concepts of the original without sacrificing anything. Additional improvements include four additional 5” dual purpose guns (compared to county class) and a complete overhaul of the placement and type of Anti-air Defense emplacements. The Tulioc class now has twenty-four quadruple-mount 37.5mm flak emplacements and forty-eight sextuple-mount 25mm machinegun emplacements. The only weapons system removed from the class without upgrade or revision is the submerged bow-mounted torpedo tube. Overall it is clear that the Tulioc class isn’t just a larger County class; it is almost an entirely new vessel that looks a lot like its precursor.
