Yes, that's traditional fox mask, and the fox, you are right, is a typical trickster in eastern cultures. But as for me, I always tended to see more than just tricks and ill intentions in typical Chinese fox tales - thought foxes when they come to humans often actually need the warmth of communication, not human life or energy. But, well, it is your culture, not mine, you know better anyway.
As for the expression, I do not exactly understand it myself. Not that I actually should to, assuming the idea of the picture.
