GIMP isn't perfect by any means and it frustrates me sometimes, but it's a servicable program so if you don't have Photoshop and don't want to buy it (or crack it) then it's definately workable!
Your stuff looks good so far. n.n So just keep at it! =3 Practice makes perfect!

Nice picture, I'm especially fond of the saturated, glowing colors. The only thing I'd note is Rainbow's wings being a bit oddly bent - but that's more because of my preference than anything else.
