Description Sometimes, in the name of what is right, there are some who must be hurt. Pain inflicted in the name of justice, and that's sometimes when it hurts the most...
-Original quote

More colored pencil shading practice, this time with regards to light sources and properly rendering textures. Another pony, Lightning Dust in this case, presumably showing her reaction after being demoted/kicked out of the Wonderbolt Academy. I don't know why exactly the ending of this episode rubbed me the wrong way, but it did. I don't wanna talk about it right now, I've already made a stamp and a Hitler reaction video on the matter, so I run the risk of sounding like a broken record. Or just very, very autistic.

Also, no offense, but to any bronies who come here to post counter-arguments and reasons I should hate Dusty, I will not block you, but I WILL hide your ugly comments. She is no different than Trixie, and I know you all practically worship Trixie. So either don't start a debate with me in the first place, or GTFO.

WonderBolts academy is one of my favourite episodes, but I feel very bad for LD being thrown out, I wished it was just a temporary punishment.
I feel Spitfire was sort of responible for what happen, as she gave her leadership only over the fact that she likes to push herself.
Hopefully she'll be back in season four.

Also, I haven't seen any hate for her, I mainly seen alot of people feeling sad for her.

God tell me about it. Spitfire was the REAL villain there, since she not only fully approved of LD's recklessness at first, but THEN turned on LD with absolutely NO warning and kicked her out. If that's not a textbook example of giving mixed messages then I don't know what is.

I took one look at her opinion and felt terrible, then thought "okay, this bitch is CLEARLY not worth my time" due to her opinions on Lightning Dust. So could you not stand that episode for the same reasons I couldn't? I also didn't like how they changed Spitfire.

Let me check what you thought in detail...

Well, I can't find a list but I can take a few guesses at what your thoughts were, so... for the most part, I think so...

My major gripes with the episode was that the pacing was poorly handled, Pinkie was annoying as hell, Spitfire came off as an incompetent leader (seriously, who gives those kinds of orders, then doesn't pay enough attention to notice a possible issue?), the balloon scene was a contrived Diabolus ex Machina so the conflict would come to a head, and overall, I hated the military aspect of the whole thing. It doesn't even make sense given the context of the world of the show (I'm nearly 100% certain that this whole episode was just a shout out to Top Gun and if we ever see the Wonderbolts again (unlikely, imo) very little about the nature of the Academy will be referenced) and the ending was just... bad. Quite frankly, that Spitfire just made me hate the Wonderbolts as an organization even more (I never really cared for them and after Secret of my Excess found myself wondering just why Rainbow wanted to join them). Also, no Soarin' in that episode, which sucked; he's one of my favorite characters.

If they'd used the alternate ending that Meghan McCarthy shared on Twitter, quite frankly I'd have enjoyed the episode far more, but as it is it's probably the lowest-rated episode of S3 for me.

Well as for me, I could tolerate the episode up until they started showing Lightning doing things that seemed to provide cues for the audience to "hate" her, I just thought in my head "oh crap, this new cute pony is obviously the antagonist here, and I just KNOW she's gonna get punished in the end..." and you're right, the balloon being destroyed by LD's tornado was just a stupid ploy to demonize her even more. It grew less and less tolerable until the ending, which *REALLY* upset me. For making LD out to be some kind of monster they sure gave her a pitiable expression when Bitchfire (erm, excuse me...Spitfire) ripped her badge off. That, coupled with Spitfire's enraged expression and jerky, violent hoof motion when she ripped LD's badge off, was horribly evocative of LD being physically abused as punishment. I interpreted LD's facial expression as she was about to cry, and it's a personal huge taboo of mine to portray antagonists as capable of those sorts of soft emotions, especially out of reaction to being defeated or put in their place by the heroes.

This episode hit me pretty hard because I have a history of feeling bad for cute, borderline nonthreatening female antagonists who can barely even be called villains, they are only flawed, yet the show takes their flaws and blows them WAY out of proportion to demonize the character, so that we the audience are supposed to cheer when a character like that is punished, killed, defeated, humiliated or otherwise put in her place. Female characters like that appear way too often in anime, and my emotional inability to take seeing them punished was one of the main things that made me stop being an anime fan. But now, MLP, a show with absolutely NO history of doing anything like that, throws one at me in the form of Lightning Dust...you can understand the terrible reaction I'd have to my beloved show doing this to me... fuck that shit! *goes back to watching season one reruns*

And don't get me started on the fact that Lightning was given NO warning or any kind of indication from Spitfire at ALL that what she did was wrong, since the last we've heard of her Spitfire actually COMMENDED Lightning for her reckless behavior, and then...this. "Mixed messages" doesn't even BEGIN to describe what that was! How the green popsicle fuck was LD supposed to know what was right and wrong, with that kind of lousy leadership?! Your point exactly...Spitfire (at least the crappy S3 Spitfire, not the chill one from seasons 1 and 2) is nothing short of an incompetent, abusive, sorry excuse for a leader. And you're so very right about the military or paramilitary nature of the Wonderbolts being idiotic and unfitting for a peaceful place like Equestria...I've always thought the closest thing to a military in this world is the Canterlot royal guard! They are clearly the only thing resembling a military that is needed in the entire land. The closest online brony friend I know can argue against me about his theory that the Wonderbolts are some kind of paramilitary or peacekeeping organization dedicated to doing good, but I disagree with him for the most part...I prefer how they were in season one: flying performers, and flying performers only.

Finally to conclude this tl;dr reply, I'm glad you also noticed the inexcusable lack of Soarin in a Wonderbolts episode...I may not dislike the Wonderbolts the way you do, but Soarin is my favorite Wonderbolt, and my second-favorite male character in the entire show (Shining Armor is my first favorite.) I mostly like him because he sounded silly when he got a speaking role in "The Best Night Ever," but also because he was voiced by Matt Hill, who I previously knew as Kira Yamato's dubbed voice in Gundam SEED, as well as Ed from ED Edd N' Eddy. So yeah, Soarin is awesome...that is all.

I agree completely with all your points; it just didn't make as much sense why they'd do that now. I like all the stallions, really, but Soarin' is definitely near that top; he appeared on posters but that was it, unfortunately; part of me is glad he didn't show, though, otherwise he might've gotten the 'Drill Sergeant Nasty' treatment, as well, and that would've driven me crazy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Great-5 In reply to ShadesofGrey18 [2013-02-05 18:09:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah why the hell would they do that now, when they have absolutely NO history of doing anything like that before?! Well, I guess that's not entirely true...I kinda felt they portrayed half of the mane six (Rainbow Dash, Rarity and Pinkie Pie) in that negative way in "Hearth's Warming Eve," even if they WERE just playing historic characters in a play, the uneasiness was still there, and it still felt like the writers for the show wanted us to think that they "deserved" to be frozen alive by the Windigoes. But actually, that episode was written by Merriwether Williams, who also wrote "Wonderbolt Academy," so I think we can settle on the fact that she has a disturbing fondness for punishing cute ponies. It must be her obsession or something, the way she punished half the mane six, and I've already mentioned in my last post what she did to Lightning Dust. I really wish she would be fired...and while I'm daydreaming, I also wish Lauren Faust would come back and set things right in the series. Just another reason why I think season one (and arguably the first third or half of season two, though that's debatable) is the best.

And yes, I guess we should be glad that Soarin didn't show up...I don't wanna know what he would be like after he was given the Merriwether Williams treatment...

ShadesofGrey18 In reply to Great-5 [2013-02-05 19:03:54 +0000 UTC]

I don't know about the 'firing' thing; that seems excessive, but I do think that her style of writing humor isn't as suited to this show as it was Spongebob, which she wrote some very good episodes for. (Band Geeks in particular was one of my favorites) I don't know. Larson is probably one of my favorite writers for the show.

I remember reading someone saying that Williams tends to take a more cynical view of things with her writing (and with Spongebob that makes sense, really) but that doesn't mesh too well with the overall image of Equestria, which is how we get the disaster area and terrible 'lesson' of MMDW, the unpleasant populace in Putting Your Hoof Down, the racism and cruelty of Hearth's Warming Eve, the bullying in Dragon Quest, and the mess that was Wonderbolts Academy. I believe she worked with the Slapstick-style of Polsky for Keep Calm and Flutter On which I felt was a showcasing of how the cynicism could be used for good (with the other 5) but was wasted by poor pacing and not nearly enough time available for what was necessary for the plot idea with reforming Discord.

Great-5 In reply to ShadesofGrey18 [2013-02-05 21:38:57 +0000 UTC]

Williams wrote Dragon Quest and Keep Calm and Flutter On? I enjoyed those episodes, so I had no idea she was behind them. Still, it makes me angry that freakin' Discord, a major villain from season two, gets to be redeemed, undoubtedly because the fandom practically worships him the same way they practically worship Trixie (who also got to be redeemed at the end of "Magic Duel," though I like Trixie so I can't complain,) yet Lightning Dust, who was FAR LESS threatening than Discord, and wasn't even a villain, will most likely NEVER get redeemed or even appear ever again, because the fandom doesn't like her. It's unfair and idiotic.

I can't argue that last point, at all; I agree. The worship of the fan base for minor characters like that... kinda perplexes me (Like Derpy in particular. That one was, to me, just a little in joke that went waaaaaaaay too far). Quite frankly, I'd like to see a Gilda redemption because I feel that she'd make for an actually interesting redemption episode (I don't care for Trixie much but the obsession irritates me and the episode was kind of dull.) And yes, she did write those, though she co-wrote Keep Calm with Polsky.
