Description Model number: SPH-X4
Code name: Phantom
Unit type: Supersonic space transport plane
Manufacturer: Unknown
Operator(s): NIMH (New Intelligence Martial High Command)
Accomodation: 1 pilot, 1 copilot, 2 navigators (in cockpit); Up to 25 soldiers (in pressurized cargo cabin)
Dimensions: Unknown
Construction: Titanium-oxide composite airframe, stealth-coated to absorb radar and other scanners
Powerplant: 2 x General Dynamics MHD44S external-combustion gas turbine (heat fed by internal thermal pyrothane reactor,) power output rating unknown
Equipment and design features: Sensors, range unknown; Ablative gel dispensers (dispenses silicone compound gel to absorb the heat of atmospheric reentry)
Armaments: Generally none (though alternate mission profile setup functions as supersonic bomber aircraft; in that case armament consists of a payload of up to 4 x ST97F clean-fusion "micro-nuke" warheads, or 2 x plasma-jacket, shaped-charge anti-vehicle bomb)

The SPH-X4 "Phantom" is the backbone of NIMH's air transport fleet. Capable of speeds upwards of Mach 5, and a flight ceiling exceeding 2,025 km (low Earth orbit,) the Phantom has proven itself as a dependable transport aircraft.

NIMH uses the Phantom's supersonic and space capabilities to rapidly deploy soldiers anywhere in the world. Because the craft uses space and low orbit to deploy its troops anywhere in the world, NIMH's troopers could very well be compared to the "space marines" of fiction. In addition to ferrying troops around the world, the Phantom can be converted into a cargo plane, dropping supplies and logistical support where needed. This mission profile doesn't require a pressurized cabin, so the interior cargo bay is not pressurized.

The Phantom is generally unarmed, often flying with fighter escorts when available, but a third mission profile strips out the pressurized passenger cabin or the cargo bay, replacing it with a bomb deployment bay that can hold up to six bombs, generally four general-purpose and two heavy-duty/specialized-purpose warheads. The craft's large bomb capacity, coupled with its fast and hard-to-hit nature, makes it a formidable force to the enemy.

Like most NIMH aircraft the Phantom is capable of VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing.) It also employs "lifting body" design features, forgoing the need for wings.

Closing thoughts

I first designed the Phantom all the way back in February I think, but didn't redraw/upload it until tonight/morning. I based it loosely on the UNSC Longsword interceptor from the Halo games. NIMH is basically the UNSC of my main scenario, though they are inherently antiheroic by nature...more on NIMH later. Enjoy my plane, even though my art is far from perfect!

It looks like a fighter bomber so I would take it this is cheaper to operate and maintain than anything I've made for exo/endo atmospheric vehicles.

Oh this old thing? I pretty much ripped off the longsword from Halo back then. It was designed as a hypersonic, exoatmospheric troop transport that just passes the Karman Line and then touches down again anywhere in the world in a matter of hours. But I would imagine there would be a fighter-bomber or gunship variant for sure.

I really like this. Also, my mom works at General Dynamics, pretty cool!

dude, your mom is an aerospace engineer? That's beyond badass!

I just wish I was a better artist, but I like never apply myself enough. I'm 23, I'm too old to be a novice!

Thanks for faving this piece of crap, it means a lot to me even if I'm currently pissed off at myself for not producing anything worthwhile.

Personally I think this is great! I mainly do most of my art on PMG (Doctor Noobs Pimp My Gun if you're unaware.) which is a program. I do some drawing too but I mainly stick to PMG. I was going to start posting my concept drawings and then a PMG version of my drawings. But this is great. I'm sure you're just having the artists version of writers block, I am too!

Oh, I've had "artists' writers' block" ever since this miserable year began! Ever since I was in a 3D modeling class last fall and my professor told me I needed to be able to easily draw characters from multiple angles...I had a creative breakdown and realized I could barely draw from any angle other than 3/4ths view without my proportions breaking down instantly, and as a result I never seem to put as much effort in my my new art as I did my old art. It's really sad. But I'm glad you like this one that I drew.

Also, is that the Marathon logo on your avatar? Or is it the Tau emblem from Warhammer 40K?

I wasn't even aware the two were so similar, however it is the Tau logo from Warhammer. I do very much enjoy the Tau.

Yeah I'd love to see it!

Hey, if you drew the original when you were 12 or under (which I doubt you did though,) you can submit it to my group, #ChildhoodArt , under the category "Genuine Childhood Drawings." You can also submit the redraw to the category "Childhood Art Redesigns."

Hey thanks! Yeah it's supposed to be the classic wedge-shaped "stealth" plane look. Sorta like the X-jet from the second X-Men movie too, though that one was more long and curved.

But yeah, the Phantom functions as a supersonic air/space troop transport. It's actually one of NIMH's only spacecraft, since they operate mainly on Earth and in the air.
