Description Model number: N/A
Code name: Nibiru Defender
Unit type: Elite attack plane
Manufacturer: Unknown (ancient Xandu)
Operator(s): Holy Xandu Nation
Accomodation: 1 pilot, 2 gunners and 4 navigators/technicians, in control cabin in main body
Dimensions: Unknown
Construction: Ancient alloy of some sort, capable of absorbing thermal and radio energy, rendering craft almost completely invisible to sensors
Powerplant: Unknown ancient technology (converts atmospheric air to electromagnetic energy, creating field which pushes against a planet's magnetic field)
Equipment and design features: Defensive force field, generated by powerplant (deflects all projectile weapons and most directed energy weapons)
Armaments: 3 x Nibiru bomb (drills into ground and detonates,) stored under main fuselage; 2 x thermal projectile cannon, mounted on side turrets; directed thermal/microwave weapon, mounted in nose

This is one of "baby planes" that are stored aboard the Nibiru Ark, a massive wheel-shaped mothership measuring precisely 8km in diameter. This ark, or "mother plane" is designed solely for the destruction of our world and the extermination of all Adepts at the hands of the Holy Xandu Nation, while 49,000 of the most faithful Xandu are to be saved and taken aboard the mothership as the world burns. These planes are launched from the mothership, and serve to defend it as well as to disarm the world's military forces by wiping out their military bases and command/intelligence centers as well as bombing major cities. The mother plane carries exactly 1,500 of these baby planes.

The Defender is meant as a bomber plane, carrying three "Nibiru bombs." These are powerful thermal/seismic weapons that are attached to drills and capable of piercing the earth's crust. The bombs are designed to drill down to a depth, then detonate which raises a "mountain" of variable height, which quickly collapses and can destroy anything within a 10km radius. The Xandu plan to use these planes to wipe out the airbases of the world, preventing the earth military from launching a counterattack.

For dogfighting the Defender is equipped with twin fire-linked, turret-mounted thermal projector cannons, which operate on a similar principle as the IX4 units carried by the Xandu army (the IX4 rifle was reverse-engineered from ancient thermal projectile technology) but ar much higher caliber. The red-hot projectiles can burn through almost any conventional aircraft or battle tank. The Defender is also equipped with a thermal/harmonic radiation weapon capable of incinerating targets on the ground...the Xandu use this weapon to take out personnel, small buildings and ground units.

For defensive measures the Defender is equipped with a force field which stops all projectile weapons at 2 meters from the craft, the waves of energy making missiles and all other projectile weapons detonate harmlessly in mid-air. This force field can also absorb or block most directed energy weapons such as the laser CIWS (close-in weapons system) used by the earth forces on their air and sea battleships.

The only weapon capable of piercing the Defender's shields is a type of self-propelled bomb developed by the adepts which is unaffected by radiation and is designed to release a destructive EMP/gamma ray burst. The bomb is enveloped in a plasma jacket upon launch, which negates the effects of the Defender's shields. This bomb was developed specifically to take out the Defender, and is expensive to produce and difficult to retrofit fighter craft to be capable of launching this bomb, so the adepts have only a small number of these anti-Defender bombs. The adepts are currently researching more effective ways to take down the Defenders before they cause too much damage.

Renegade Xandu Kai Ibrajin stole a Defender upon leaving the Holy Xandu Nation, and has retrofitted it to serve as his personal ship.

Cool picture! Sounds like it's a formidable weapon as well. I'd like to design some cool looking spaceships for the Astral Fantasy series as well some time.

Yeah the Xandu are jerks, 'nuff said. But they've got some pretty nice ships! My main influence for this ship was the "alien attacker" fighters from Independence Day, and this was actually traced over a much cruder sketch of the same ship I did 10 months ago.

Hey, maybe I can help you design some ships sometime!

That would be great! You seem to be really good at making futuristic looking stuff, you could perhaps design some of the ships seen in the game, that would be cool!

Yeah, I remember how much fun I had drawing Ryu the dragon for you last year, I would love to do some good old fashioned mechanical designing! What kinds of stuff would you want me to design?

Well, you could perhaps design some Jovian and Versian ships, maybe some character designs as well seeing as how you're much better at drawing humans than me. The Jovian ships resemble something the Zentraedi would fly in Macross (except that their ships are typically a dark blue color with red lights and stuff), the Versian ships resemble craft from Star Wars or perhaps ships from the Phantasy Star series (take the Landale for instance). I'll let you know a bit of the characters as well if you're interested.

I'll see what I can do, just note me sometime with what you want to see drawn, like describe it and its features as much as you can to me and I'll see what I can do.

Well, I always felt that the Jovians should have ship designs inspired by the Zentraedi, here are some examples.

The ships of the Versian League I felt should look like ships from the Gradius games

or ships from Gundam

maybe a bit of Old Republic ship inspiration from the Star Wars prequels

Basically, the Jovian ships have a more alien looking, streamlined design but still rather gritty and formidable in appearance, while the Versian ships resemble classic, metallic craft like something you'd see in Star Wars, Starfox and any number of other science fiction universes. I hope this helps a little, if you want more info I'll let you know.

I'll see what I can do, but it'll probably be quite awhile.

That's fine, take as much time as you need.

Thanks. I was inspired a lot by Independence Day, namely the "alien attacker" ships.
