This is one of my favorite stories from the Book of Mormon. Basically, a long and bloody war had been raging between two nations, the Nephites and the Lamanites. The Nephites had lost half of their country to invaders, and thousands of families had lost their homes. Then two Nephite brothers, prophets of God, decided to preach to the Lamanites instead of fighting them. Soon after their mission started they were captured by a Lamanite army and thrown into a squalid prison, where they were starved and beaten. Just as the brothers were about to be executed by their captors, the Lord sent down fire from heaven to protect them. The witnesses of the miracle believed in Christ, and then angels came to teach them. The 300 would-be executioners became missionaries to their own people; the war ended and the converted Lamanites returned all the lands they had conquered.
