Did you use the paths tool for this? Or did you use a program? I tried to use similar effects on my Madworld signature, I used paths for the lightning.

The lines come from the edge detect filter in gimp (hence the name). I painted in the sort of blobby shapes you can see, and then I ran the edge detect filter on a copy visible layer and set it to screen. The piece was originally a good bit larger than this, and then I shrunk it down, so that's why the lines appear thinner and crisper than they do from just edge detect alone.
