Ocracoke Lighthouse
11”x14”
Mars Lumograph and mechanical pencils (2H-5B)
Reference Photo is an old photograph of mine

Ocracoke Lighthouse was built in 1823 on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina and stands 75 feet tall. The island was made famous by Edward Teach, aka the pirate Blackbeard, who used the island as a hideout. He died here in 1718. I lost track of the time spent on this drawing, but it was many hours. Let me know what you think.

Oh, no way! You tricked me again! I could have sworn this was a photo on the preview image! The door on the little hut looks particularly good. As I watched the image loading, I thought, wow that door looks real. The trees are very impressive.
Interesting to hear about Edward Teach. I didn't know that.

Hello Greg,

I decided to feature your lighthouse in my group. You can find it as a first thing in a "Featured" folder as well as everyone who enters our Masters gallery.

Personally, I truly admire all your lighthouses and your dedication to them. I really like to see you making a tutorial for our ongoing contest and get yourself that journal feature as a prize. I'd love to see you there. Cheers for now!

Oh wow, that's beautiful! I love the way it stands out against the sky. And those trees are so detailed. They must have taken you forever.

I love lighthouses, but the only ones I've visited are all in Oregon, Washington, and California. And they don't have as much history as the ones on the east coast.

Thank you for the kind words. The trees were tedious but I'm happy with how they came out. The west coast lighthouses are so unique, I wish I could see more of them. I've been to a few in California but that's it. I'm sure they have a great history of their own!

You're welcome! I suppose we do have some cool lighthouses here in Oregon. My favorite is Heceta Head: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heceta_H…

That lighthouse looks really cool! Love the cliffs and rocks you have out there, not much like that here on the east coast. Thanks for sharing!
