Description I started working on this image on Monday, that night I had a dream I was walking around in it.
originally this was conceived of as monochromatic, the colour just evolved.

enjoy.

this is digital work or not?

really lovely.

gregoriousone In reply to chiquita83 [2006-12-21 00:38:55 +0000 UTC]

yes it is.
all the textures and colours were digitally sampled from real things though.. i basically used chunks of colour and and texture to paint with in many many layers.

i'm loving it too!
i'd still like to see some more of the imaginarium, tho...
oh, btw, a co-worker and i purchased one of your prints today as an xmas gift for one of our sales reps...you're welcome (it was seven thirty a.m. - 18x24 matte print framed of course!)...you can thank us later!

im sure images like 'the imaginarium' will pop up from time to time... right now i need to solve these equations.

wow.. thanks for the purchase, had you not told me I wouldn't know who bought it. I only know that I sell things, not who buys them.
let me know how it looks.. I haven't seen it that size yet. You should have told me you were buying I could have dropped the price and saved you some cash. (although im not complaining at the 11.84 profit).

thank you kindly!

gregoriousone In reply to fredfree [2006-12-16 15:18:27 +0000 UTC]

thanks j.
it's kind of hard to describe-- it wasnt the completed image i was walking through-- at that point all i had done was the shapes and background layers, but i was walking through the image along the curves and it has a more 3-d feel to it-- almost like i shrunk down to the size of a couple of pixels.
very strange and fun.

fredfree In reply to gregoriousone [2006-12-16 15:27:05 +0000 UTC]

would love to do that some time. sounds like a kind of fantastic voyage [minus raquel welch].

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregoriousone In reply to fredfree [2006-12-16 15:29:08 +0000 UTC]

it was the first time i ever recall having dreamed of walking through my art.
I think it's because these last few images ive uploaded i feel closer to than any other work ive done-- they are coming from a stronger place. it's weird to describe.

How do you do stuff like this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregoriousone In reply to LolaTheMusical [2006-12-16 15:22:09 +0000 UTC]

sure, ask the tough questions. Well it's not really a touch question, just hard to explain. This image along with the last three started out first with me placing the shapes-- the lines and circles. Once I got a composition that worked I started adding different background textures to the sections and just built up from there. Most of this is not brush work-- the colours and textures are all sampled from images already digitized-- anything from old paper to a photo of a rock or side of an old phone booth. I also have a file of lines and textures I created in Corel Painter 9.
It's just basically building up layer after layer.. knocking out bits and pieces of layers underneath to add depth and texture.
I hope that helps in some way.

Would this be possible to create using traditional techniques? Not digital, I mean.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregoriousone In reply to LolaTheMusical [2006-12-16 18:48:22 +0000 UTC]

indeed it would.. my digital work gets put together in a very traditional sort of way.

Have you ever made something like this in a non-digital way?

gregoriousone In reply to LolaTheMusical [2006-12-16 20:49:30 +0000 UTC]

i used to work in natural media... but i havent for over a decade.

LolaTheMusical In reply to gregoriousone [2006-12-16 20:51:20 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't it bother you that your work only exists inside the memory of a box?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregoriousone In reply to LolaTheMusical [2006-12-17 17:03:43 +0000 UTC]

not at all. why should it?
working digitally allows me to sample all kinds of interesting textures and colours. I have folder after folder of source material that I use to construct my images. Anytime I need a hard copy of my work all I have to do is hit the print button. And if I want something bigger.. well that's primarily why I have a prints account.

LolaTheMusical In reply to gregoriousone [2006-12-18 05:42:48 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. It bothers me when I end up editing my work on the computer because it changes it and it doesn't feel real to me anymore.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregoriousone In reply to LolaTheMusical [2006-12-18 23:30:17 +0000 UTC]

see im not editing work, im actually creating images-- so they feel just as real to me. I don't need to have a canvas to satisfy my need to create.. I prefer working digitally because it allows me to create the things I see in my head -- plus it really allows me to play around with the compoistion and design of the whole piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LolaTheMusical In reply to gregoriousone [2006-12-19 20:13:40 +0000 UTC]

But it only exists in a box.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregoriousone In reply to LolaTheMusical [2006-12-19 22:18:14 +0000 UTC]

and that is ok for me. Seems like it isnt for you.. which is ok by me since it's my art. I like working in this medium, dont care that it only exsists as 1's and 0's--- sounds to me like you are implying that it's less valid as art.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LolaTheMusical In reply to gregoriousone [2006-12-21 00:48:06 +0000 UTC]

No, I'm not. I see that it is art. You are one of my favourite artists here, and I'm honestly not just saying that. I've just been thinking lately about this digital world and why I'm not outside playing in the snow.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gregoriousone In reply to LolaTheMusical [2006-12-22 15:06:04 +0000 UTC]

I dont believe that you are just saying that-- and yes I have to admit that sometimes I think it's weird that all this art I make only exsists as 1's and 0's on a drive.
Working digitally has allowed me to create more fluidly and efficiently. Plus in the long run it's way cheaper than constantly having to resupply my artists materials. lol.

as always thanks for the support
now go play in the snow!
