i know this contest is controversial for many reasons.
i will not comment on the gay movement part, because anybody who looks closely at my journal knows my opinion about that.
shepard fairey's understanding of art as a completely free domain for creativity is another thing:
a) should one credit artists whose work was used in substantial parts to create the own artwork (and i'm not counting quotation, but actual use like a stock graphic/resource)? certainly.
b) should those artists (if personally alive and available) get a share of a large financial gain? it would be a decent thing to do.
c) does it make you the antichrist, if you disrespect those terms above? i don't think so. it's worth discussion, but not crying for blood. i've also had my artwork ripped before. it wasn't funny (especially if another party made money with it), but it wasn't the end of the world. it's rather the way the world is. like it or not.

i think this contest is a good way of dealing with this issue. i've seen some hilarious works based on the challenge. i also think mr fairey will have the time of his life viewing the entries. if he is true to his own ideals (and i guess he is), he'll enjoy the creative energy that comes from controversy.

i decided to contribute a serious costumation. FAIR deserves it and while i find fairey's artwork does arrest attention easily ... i don't think it is trying to send the message FAIR wants to convey:
- a fist as symbol for a peaceful movement?
- taken from communist propaganda? (we all know how a majority of the us population likes that association).
- colours are sunny, but look aggressive when combined with the symbols?

so i replaced the fist with a symbol of the 1960ies peace movement and added a more patriotic colour scheme. kinda looks like i'm quoting fairey's obama poster, but hey ... we're supposed to rip the master.
