i followed some advise from the whoforum and watched "the face of evil" to introduce myself to leela. i like her. very feisty!
i've yet to get a feeling for her so this isn't exactly one of my best works likeness-wise, but i like the warm tones. might ask around for a decent reference picture for another try.

Leela has always been a favorite companion of mine. During the Original Show: Leela, Sara Jane, and the 4th Doctor were my number one's! Even though I was born in 1980, and they were "before my time".
For the life of me I couldn't understand the Rose attraction. Although I'm better about it now after the 4th Series Finale of the new show.
Yet, I can still remember Leela as this cute little savage in almost Nothing running around the screen, and trying to kill people with her darts! LMAO, Now That is a sexy companion!
BTW: I'm a straight woman... There is just something so amazing about Leela I cannot help myself. *Foolish Grin*

i haven't seen much more then "the face of evil" so far (which will change soon, but still). i like the fact the she's not a heartless primitive "klingon", but still genuinely conveys a member of a tribal culture.
and i guess the tiny leather outfit didn't hurt to get her popular - mostly among the male viewers, i presume.
rose ... well ... i think she has more in common with leela than one might think at first. both are unrefined in the beginning, but very honorable and passionate creatures. you could call rose a chav savage. *lol* which is why i liked her more in the first season together with nine.
