Description Resubmitted a better image, so may aswell redo the comments!

Luna eclipse of course, with Neptune the little blue smudge on the bottom right.

Big thanks to =elffinarts for dragging me along to ~AstronoMikael 's Rainmaker Observatory to bolt our cameras on the back of some telescopes.

Was a fun evening, once the cloud cleared up!

This is a stitching of two images together, couldn't fit the whole moon in one frame.

The photos don't do it justice I think. Seeing it through the telescope it was just amazing.

Great shot! My sister in Mackay had a bit of bad luck.... her latest journal gave me a good giggle. [link]
She had all the equipment, but no moon.... I had the moon, and no equipment!

Pretty good shot dude. I didn't even try taking any shots... really need to get my hands on a teleconverter first... Detail is pretty good... you can see the dakr patches and craters on the surface

greykonos In reply to AchillesZ32 [2007-08-29 04:07:32 +0000 UTC]

We ended up putting a teleconverter on the telescope, but we were already unable to get the full moon in a shot, got all crazy close!

Awesome!!! I shot some frames with my 75-300mm and a $30 tripod that kept slipping and blurring my shots

Boo. Oh well. These shots are amaaazing.

greykonos In reply to ellenitoumpas [2007-08-29 03:07:41 +0000 UTC]

You can get some decent moon shots with a 300mm, but yeah, sounds like that tripod may have been a bit of a problem.
Other than the swish one with the tracking system, etc, briefly used another one, a slow motion tripod. Damn it was good. So smooth and easy to adjust.

T-Dev [2007-08-28 23:12:47 +0000 UTC]

That is how it is done.
If my tripod had been of better quality I would just have managed a small shot with my 300mm. Though would have been great if my telescope works and could use my camera with it.

greykonos In reply to T-Dev [2007-08-28 23:43:05 +0000 UTC]

300mm isn't too bad for the moon. I've gotten some decent shots with one in the past, though had to crop a bit.
I want a telescope now.

sweet shots there grey, not sure if i'll upload mine now out of shame i like it how the polar point shows up too (or at least it looks like one of the moon's poles )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

greykonos In reply to albedo [2007-08-28 23:41:54 +0000 UTC]

Still upload! I wanna see!
I have no idea about poles or such.
I should actually look into what all the stuff is.

KylieKeene [2007-08-28 22:04:49 +0000 UTC]

That is so much cooler than what I was trying to view through the clouds.

I didn't get photos 'cause I never had a telescope, only my 200mm which would have laughed at me lol

Really nice shot

greykonos In reply to KylieKeene [2007-08-28 23:40:31 +0000 UTC]

I took a few shots with my 55-200, came out okay! Even got some stars in it. Downside, I screwed up with the ISO. Way too high. Nasty.

I got about two dozen shots of the eclipse on my last roll of Provia 100F. Now I need to finish the roll and send it off to get developed. Unfortunately I only had a 28-100 zoom available, not a telescope. Nice photo!

greykonos In reply to imroy [2007-08-28 23:38:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, I was wishing i'd taken my F80 and some velvia. (Or maybe provia 400 when it was at its darkest)
Moon should have just fit full frame, and the colours would have popped.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

imroy In reply to greykonos [2007-08-29 06:07:22 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, maybe. I've got three rolls of Velvia 50 in the fridge but decided against using them. Velvia does funny things on long exposures, whereas Provia has performed well with long exposures and in shadow detail. Provia has pretty strong colours too, so it's not a total loss.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

greykonos In reply to imroy [2007-08-29 12:03:16 +0000 UTC]

This one was 8 second exposure, but, on a normal moon, it's a LOT faster. Of course, this is the sort of moon you want the colour from. :/

Provia 400 would be good.

They merged perfectly! I have yet to try to merge mine.

greykonos In reply to MarkGreenmantle [2007-08-28 23:36:16 +0000 UTC]

I probably need to redo it when not so tired. You know, I think I was hallucinating a little last night. Things were moving that were not moving! Staying up processing these didn't help the lack of sleep.

Try the photomerge tool, it did it better than I could! (Of course, it helped when i increased the canvas size to the sides aswell as the top. It kept popping out of shape, took me a while to realise why.)

MarkGreenmantle In reply to greykonos [2007-08-29 03:01:08 +0000 UTC]

that was happening to you too eh? How odd! I didn't consume anything at Mikaels, so I know we didn't have any wormwood! lol

I didn't try the photomerge tool! dammit, I did mine the old school way - took ages to line the damn thing up!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

greykonos In reply to MarkGreenmantle [2007-08-29 03:12:57 +0000 UTC]

Mine lined up okay , just had to make a layer mask and fade out one edge.
The other moon shot was the photomerge, and I didn't have to adjust anything!

MarkGreenmantle In reply to greykonos [2007-08-29 03:27:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm still floored at how much sharper your shots came out.

Hey I vote we head out to the beach to capture the moonrise with the smaller telescope sometime so we can get the moon right on the horizon with its reflections on the waves below it.

Did you by chance see the news late last night? Lateline had footage with an even closer view of the moon.
