There was 2 Squadrons with Tempest that scored high kills during the Diver Patrols, Nos 3 with 288, 486 Sqns with 223 and No 91 a spitfire Mk XIV squadron with 189.
This tally is not due to aircraft type but more to skill and luck to the pilots and ground and comand support. The spec on the Tempest Mk V and Spitire Mk XIV are really quite close but the Mk XIV was in fact the faster aircraft at all alt. dont believe everything you read on the web not all of it is vetted.
On a side note worth saying, It was a Spitfire pilot that wing tipped a V1 first in the diver patrols, Flt Off Ken Colliers RAAF, No 91 Sqd.

Tempests were used more often than the Mk.XIV Spitfires, simply due to the sheer speed of the Tempest compared to the Spitfire. The RAF also used modified Mustang Mk.IVs and for night intercepts, Mosquitoes in addition to the Tempests.
