Description
An atheist is someone who does not believe in any sort of deity.
     Although I am Roman Catholic, and thus believe in God, I don't expect everyone else to do so as well.
          I will treat you with respect until you give me reason not to.

As far as I'm concerned, so long as you aren't hurting yourself or others, or breaking the law, you can believe what you want.
   The First Amendment exists for a reason after all.

Which brings us to the anti-theist.

Atheism is just not believing in any religion, Anti-theism is actively opposing any religion.
While only the absolute worst of atheists claims that religion is the source of all problems, the anti-theist outright believes that religion is DANGEROUS, and that the world would be better off with out it.
They believe that eliminating religion would get rid of the worlds problems-usually war, though homophobia and religious extremism are often included as well.
They do not tolerate those who disagree with them, and are the most likely group to conclude that you are stupid/retarded/autistic/backwards/etc. solely on the basis of your religion.

Essentially, take the worst, most intolerant person you know, the worst troll you've ever encountered on the internet, the fervor of a religious extremist, and a drop of atheism, and you get these people.

For most practical purposes, the only difference between a religious extremist and an anti-theist is that only one has a religion.

Now, this is why I do not like antitheism:

1: Arrogance

Many of these people go around insulting and harassing people.
I've literally seen journals trashing other people's beliefs with completely biased and untrue statements that end with a line like
"if you're offended, it's because I'm right" and similar.

I've seen and heard of these kinds of people defending things like anti-Semitic bullying and other forms of harassment based on religion, saying things along the lines of "they could just dump their irrational beliefs", as well as incidents of them defending equally awfully statements with "free speech" while conveniently forgetting that the  First Amendment ALSO gives us freedom of religion- and that it doesn't cover things like HARASSMENT or libel to begin with.

This kind of behavior is the definition of arrogance, and I don't much care for it.

2:Intolerance

As I have stated, these guys don't much care for differing opinions.
If you are not an atheist, they will consider you a crackpot, moronic and insane, and the source of all that is wrong in the world to boot.

Even if you are an atheist, if you're not just as bigoted as they are, they'll probably hate you too.
These guys will happily be that one guy who decides to harass Christians because of the Crusades- everyone who actually participated being long dead be darned- among nastier sentiments.

They're also highly unlikely to distinguish between actual religious people and those lunatics the religious extremists- never mind that religious people are probably the group that hates religious extremists the most.

And they're not going to distinguish between actual religions and cults either, even though they are two very different things.
(Actual religions don't act like over-possessive crazy exs, for one.)

Nope, according to the antitheist, they're all proof that religion is horrible and therefore you are too for practicing it and thus continuing all that is bad in the world.

3: Hypocrisy

Anti-theists claim that the world would be better without religion, yet display many tactics and behaviors akin to religious extremism.

Religious extremists :

- do not tolerate other beliefs

- do not tolerate those who are of the same belief, but who are not as extreme as them

- attempt to intimidate others

- seek to eradicate other beliefs through any means possible

- demonize the opposition

- harass critics of their belief

- refuse to give anything that does not fit their belief the benefit of the doubt

- insist on their way of thinking even if it flies in both the face of logic AND the actual tenets of their belief

- believe the world can't be perfect until everyone thinks as they do

And all these behaviors fit those of the anti-theist to a t.
Honestly, the irony of this situation would be hilarious if it wasn't so disturbing.

The way anti-theists act disproves their own belief- because despite being the polar opposite of religious extremists, their OWN extremism shows that the worst of humanity's problems STILL EXIST even without religion, thus proving that the eradication of religion would change NOTHING.

That's because the problem was never religion- it has always been ignorance and intolerance, and creating another extreme, bigoted view will NOT make the world a better place. Far from it, in fact.
Only learning to accept our differences can do that.

Which is why I can accept atheists, but not anti-theists.
Because I will never accept an actively bigoted group with open arms, no matter what their affiliation, because such behavior is immoral.

As I have said, I will respect you until you give me reason not to, and anti-theism, like other extremist groups, has given me that reason.
