omg I just saw this 8'D
I'm so happy you're coming here aahh.
I'm not sure where you're going in chon buri, but here in pattaya is just crazy and parties l'D (not sure about other places though tbh, but from everywhere I went pattaya was definitely one of them) i remember going to Ripley's infinity maze there once on my birth day ; w ; That place messes with my brain a lot and makes me question about life.
But you can ask me if need any advice ; w ;

Thats funny i just got back from Thailand/Myanmar yesterday xD
idk how much experience you have w/ other countries, but my advice is if you know any local/ anyone who lives there, ask them about prices and such so you know a bit of what to pay. I would recommend haggling for everything xD unless its like a restaurant with set prices, anything on the street including taxis will be jacked up once they see you're not local. Even if its not that much money for you, it does add up.
also i think someone mentioned this, even though its hot and you'll be tempted to wear short things, still bring long pants(/skirts) and maybe a light scarf for your shoulders. in public you should be fine wearing tank tops and things, even if its not totally acceptable there, but it would really suck if you wanted to go to a pagoda or temple and couldn't because your shoulders/knees weren't covered :c
oh also, customs and such. we brought nice reusable waterbottles and they almost got thrown away several times.. my dad bought these small stone spheres that he tried to bring back and they threw a fit because you could supposedly hit someone with them... yeah so just be overly-cautious of what you bring in your carryon, as it can be kinda hard to reason with someone when you dont speak each others' language (i assume you dont lol)
most importantly, smile!! if you dont understand, smile xD they like smiles. also they bow so i just kinda head-bowed whenever anyone did anything haha
those are the things i can think of c: sorry for being a bit rambly i hope i could help at all ^^ I hope you have a good time!!

Ooooh, I'm soo jealous! I have family in Chon buri that I don't see often enough. Gonna be stuck in Sweden for a bit longer... However, Chon buri is quite big, and I mostly know about the city part called Bangsaen, where the university is. It's a student town so there are a lot of youngsters and happenings going on there. Also, it has THE BEST beach ever! I recommened getting the Fried rice there There's a line of tuktuk-buses/taxis that you can jump on and that circulates between the city and the beach.
There's also a big mall called Laemtong and sometimes there's a food and clothes market outside too.  I think there's a Swensen's ice cream bar in Laemtong too! And I don't remember if Laemton has it, but many bigger malls use to have a cinema and sometimes an arcade hall on the top floor! And the university (Burapha) has a nice aquarium you can visit

I can also recommend traveling around a bit. Chon buri is just an hour away from both Bangkok and Pattaya. There's a huge and newely built park i Pattaya with a big temple that is really nice to visit.
I haven't been to the Tiger temple for many years, but I think it's lovely The animals aren't exploit in the way as they can be at other places. Always take a good look how good the animals are treated before paying for any services! The Tiger Temple is in the west part of Kanchanaburi, a couple of hours from Bangkok. If you go there, remember not to wear any red or orange.

Thailand is a lovely country, and people are very friendly and honest. But as at any place in the world, especially at tourist attractions, keep your wits with you all the time. Be careful with money and accepting things from strangers. And being spoiled by the clean scandinavian nature, keep away from tap water Street food is usually no problem though.

And here's some useful Thai-phrases for the road I'll try to write it somewhat phonetic to Scandinavians.
"Pet mai?" - Is it spicey?
"Pet" - Spicey "Mai pet" - Not spicey
"Kin khao ru yang?" - Have you eaten yet? Answer with "Kin" (Eat) or "Yang" (later). I think this can also be used as a greeting.
"Ym" - I'm full
"Sawat di kha" - Hello (for women. For men it ends with "kapp")
"Khappun kha" - Thank you (for women. Same as above)
"Falang" - Foreinger. Used to describe you, you will probably hear it a lot, and it's usually not in a  rude way It's also the name of a very tasty fruit!
"Suei" - Beautiful, Might also be heard a lot
Also don't buy a fruit called durian. If you see someone opening a durian, run far away. You might also see signs at places, at the airport for example, that forbids durian ;D

And that's a short introduction of the wonderful country Thailand and Chon buri! Feel free to ask if there's something else, I'll try my best to help Hope you have a very nice trip!

I went to Japan, though that is certainly different than Thailand xD
I must say though, if it is a long flight try to get an aisle seat. I was lucky and got an aisle on both of my 14 hour flights.
Hope you have fun ^^

Shadonut [2015-02-10 00:27:34 +0000 UTC]

Always keep your wits about you. Sometimes the trip takes you instead of you taking the trip, nevertheless, it will be fun.

After visiting last summer I suggest that you spend frugally the first few days, and then be a little more liberal when you get a feel for how things are valued. I kinda wish I had spent more haha! I had so much space in my suitcase, that I could've bought more stuff.

Food! Also be willing to try new food! You (usually) won't regret breaking the mold and trying a new dish. Now on the other hand... when traveling, it's wise to let your body get used to the local water source. Different countries usually treat their water differently in the ways of antibiotics and stuff. I suggest that you track down bottled water if the tap isn't trustworthy.

While it's fun to adventure in a new place free of worry, it's also wise to have a little extra money with you if you can't find an ATM or the store/vendor you're visiting doesn't accept credit cards. SPEAKING OF CREDIT CARDS. The exchange rate in foreign countries is usually HORRIBLE!! and your credit card company will charge extra fees for credit use outside of the country. Monetary exchange desks are also a rip-off. When possible, use a debit card for getting money from an ATM or for paying for good directly. (I had my Chase Private Client card during my trip and it worked like a charm.)

Last but not least~ it never hurts to brush up on ethnic and cultural cues. It would be a shame to accidentally make a hand gesture that the natives consider obscene, and then be treated badly for it. (Example: if a European came to visit in the US and gave someone the middle finger by accident, they'd be in some trouble despite the first amendment.) Learning some basic phrases in the native language is also appreciated. Most of the time the locals understand English (like they did in Italy) but some simple phrases or formalities are always appreciated.

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if people in Thailand feel the same about this, as they do in China and Korea, but bare shoulders in considered immodest. So you might want to pack a light short sleeved cardigan.

Also don't drink water that hasn't been boiled or bottled. Its not that its dirty, its just that the organisms that live in water are different wherever you go, and introducing unfamiliar organisms into your body can really screw up your digestive system and will make you miserable for a few days. I got into the habit of dipping my dishes and utensils in the hot tea at restaurants.

Read a book about the culture.

I hope you have a ton of fun on your trip.

Well I don't have any personal experience, but like always, keep your valuables closest to your heart.  |D
I know in Italy they have a high population of gypsy pickpockets who will sell you friendship bracelets and have
someone take your money at the same time. It's some weird trick I don't want to know about.
