Description Name: Irène 'Rena' Lucas
Alias: B.B / Witch of Sleep / Doctor Sleep (as a nod to Stephen King's character Danny Torrance)
Nicknames: Rena, Rina, Reene, Bunny. Most people of Gotham's underworld never addresses her by her civil name and usually stick with Bunny (in reference to the Moon Rabbit ('Tsuki no Usagi'), a popular japanese symbol she uses as her trademark.)
Race: Metahuman
Ethnicity:Caucasian, French.
Nationality: Japanese. Her parents had to give up on their daughter's birth right as Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship.
Birthdate and place: Irène was born in a town of Hokkaido, on May 5th.
Immediate family: Alban & Colette Lucas (parents), Maxence 'Masaharu' Lucas (brother)

Height: 169 cm / 5'6"
Weight: 55 to 61kg / 121 to 134lbs
Skin: Smooth pale peach skin. Irène makes sure her skin is as clean and smooth as possible, but it marks easily and she's often seen with black rings or bruises. When she is sick, red patches appear in her neck, on her cheeks and forehead. She also gets sunspots on her face and shoulders whenever she's exposed to sunlight. She tries to get rid of them each summer.
Hair:  Polished cream blonde (also called 90s blonde), Irène has long wavy hair she styles either in messy buns or in high and tight ponytail. Growing older (around 24), she starts wearing a messy bob with a fringe.
Eyes: Upturned black eyes.

Clothing: She's very careful about her appearance and wouldn't let anyone believe she has any noticeable weakness. Her style is always elaborate even when it looks unkempt, borrowed from US vintage clothing style, cosplay and sportswear. Irène has no identifiable costume as she likes to vary her outfits ; she usually favors comfortable clothing for work such as bomber jackets, shorts, tennis skirts, high socks and sportshoes. In the back of each of the jackets she uses for work, a patch of the Japanese's rabbit moon is embroidered.

Extra features: Two noticeable beauty marks on the face ; one under the left eye, another on the lower lip. Lots of cuts on the hands, arms and feet. Her cuspid teeth are slightly filed down so as to have a wilder look.
Voice: Sweet, low voice, slightly drawling when calm, it can climb high and almost sounds like a treble when she's happy or excited. Irène sometimes put emphasis on the wrong syllables which makes her sentences unintellegible. She also has a strong accent and tends to pronounce names the Japanese way.
Scent: Shampoo and male perfume
Posture: She suffers from lumbar lordosis, meaning the natural curve of the lumbar region of her back is slightly accentuate.

Aligment: Chaotic Neutral
Theme Song(s):
'GIRL' by Daoko
'Crane/White Lightning' by RZA
'Belladona of Sadness' by Asei Kobayashi and Mayumi Tachibana

Occupation(s): Daytime, she has a part-time job as a writer in a greeting card company in addition to her psychology studies. This job will later develop into a small illegal trafficking of fake suicide notes, with the help of a handwriting expert and a private detective. She also does a couple of hours as a waitress to up an income.
At night, she offers her services as a 'sleep therapist' (hence the nickame Doctor Sleep). Her work consists of helping people with sleep trouble to regain balance ; most of the time, they are insomniac people she helps to calm down by using her psychic abilities, but it happens she has to take care of hypersomniacs, narcoleptics, as well as people who suffer from night terrors.
Later, she starts working for bigger mafia bosses such as Black Mask as a persecutor, using her gaslighting abilities to obtain informations or favors from hostages.

Power & abilities:
Oneirokinesis; Irène is able to have an effect on people's slumber and uses it to promote emotional and physical healing within it. Over time she manages to improve her abilities and eventually becomes more powerful as she can produce and modify dreams with the help of Pr. Tokita Kosaku's DC-MINI. She's able to put people to sleep simply by closing their eyes.
Gaslighting; as her cerebral abilities develop, she's able to influence people's mind without speaking much. She's often asked to act during interrogations to obtain informations, confessions or just to break people.
Driving expert; daring driver, she can easily leave the police behind and quickly escape from a crime scene or a chase.
Fighting skills; although her fighting style is messy as hell (it looks like some weird mixing shit between capoeira and kung-fu) Irène can provide a good fight with her staff. She's very envious of Nightwing's fighting abilities though and would lose without any doubt against a skilled fighter.

Weapon(s: Irène uses a replica of a Magical Girl stick for self-defense. The thing looks harmless, gold in color with a cute little star at its top, but is actually pretty heavy and hits hard. She keeps it into a drawing tube to move around.

Likes: Magical Girls anime, J-Pop Idols, mangas (she holds a collection) and popular Japanese culture in general, reading (one of her only occupations when she arrived in Gotham), driving, taking long showers, speaking something else than English, playing retro videogames (she doesn't quite understand the new ones), milk and juice cartons (she always has some in her backpack) Dance Dance Revolution!, Electro, Hip-Hop & Transe music, dancing in clubs, swimming, studying, her job as a therapist.
Dislikes: Waking up early for work after a sleepless night of study or therapy ; on those days, she eats twice her weight to hold on. Her job as a waitress, Arkham, its staff and the GCPD, the English language, being useless in a situation, controlling people, group therapies, cooking, puzzles, riddles, every game asking for logical and/or mathematical reflexion, talking about her childhood in Japan. She hates school with a passion and does not hesitate to advise the youngest to get out of this perverse system as soon as possible.

Personality: Almost expressionless at first glance, detached, nonchalant about very serious subjects to the point that some people suggest Irène has characteristics of a sociopath. She shows very little emotion around people she's not familiar with, maintaining a very formal attitude.
However if she's given the opportunity to open up, she becomes a completely different person; carefree, spicy, unbearable, charming, trying, you love her, hate her, then love her again... Nerve-wrecking. She can be a gentle and patient person, especially with her patients, but she's so hard to follow at times people do not always know how to deal with her.

Some aspects of her personality are concerning; as a charming manipulator, she shows very little concern about other people's feelings. She's paranoid, conniving and can snap in a sudden, out of irritation, jealousy or something similar. So far she has made two stays in Arkham because of extreme tantrums she threw.

Irène is busy. Busy, busy, busy. She's always running here and there, doing several things simultaneously, what makes her quite difficult to get in touch with, without knowing her exact schedule. She keeps herself constantly occupied to avoid overthinking. When she's not working, she's most likely busy studying or practicing various activities such as swimming (her favorite) or combat training. She has no time to grant you without an appointment, and no matter how hard you try, you'll never be a part of her universe. Often surrounded, always lonely.

She seems to fill the void in her life with material, concrete things. She has an obsession with making money and doesn't hesitate to harm people if she considers it to be worthwhile. However she never takes more than what she deserves and that's why people like to do business with her.

Notes & quirks:
• She's very good at Dance Dance Revolution! and has already won a couple of prizes during annual tournaments organized by her local arcade.
• She pronounces proper nouns with a strong Japanese accent and often distorts people's names.
• Irène holds many medical records that bring together various notes on her patients. Most of these notes are written either in Japanese or French, so that she can limit the spreading of confidential informations.
• Her encounter with Tomie have made her sensitive to occult events, she can feel when a situation is supernatural. She knows a couple of things about curses thanks to Souichi and sometimes uses this knowledge against people when she feels cornered by a situation. She always does it very carefully though as it freaks her out.
• Because of the special condition of her brain and the way some occult events affected it, Irène has an altered perception of her environment. She has trouble to separate reality from fiction, and is prone to delirium crisis. She instinctively hides one eye with her hand when she can't tell if what she sees is real or not ; if the vision fades away, whatever was in front of her eyes was not real.
• When she's overwhelmed by a strong feeling (happiness, anger, embarassment or bereft) she hides her face behind her hands.
• Irène is devoided of mathematical and arithmetic logic ; she's an easy prey for Gotham's masterminds such as Edward Nigma.
• Not too long after she started using the DC-MINI, her brain begins misfiring ; as a computer, it randomly updates causing Irène to lose memories for a short time (from a couple of minutes to one hour usually)
• She had to undergo a rhinoplasty at age 16 after a guy broke her nose during her first fight. Her nose is still very sensitive to this day (if you want to make her cry, punch her in the face)
• For some reasons, Irène believes talking about Tomie will irremediably draws her, so she keeps her mouth shut about her.

Biography:

Irène was born in a small rural town of Hokkaido. Her parents left France after their first child's birth, as Colette had been promoted an aeronautical engineer.

Together with her brother Maxence, they started suffering at an early age from the Gaijin Complex, making them secluded kids despite being fluent in Japanese. Fearing that their children would withdraw into themselves, Colette and Alban decided to give them local names to make their integration easier : Maxence became Masaharu and Irène, Rena. Parents digilently comply to this change and although the adjustment period had been difficult, it somehow helped the children feeling more comfortable around other kids in kindergarten.

Irène used to be a nervous, agitated child who was prone to big crying fits for no apparent reason.
As an infant, she had hardly any interest in eating nor playing and spends most of her time sleeping. Growing a bit older, around 5 or 6, she's shook by night terrors and entrusted her parents about the presence of a twin sister by her side (Irène will learn way later that she was in fact experimenting astral projection). Her parents grew worried and sent their daughter to a therapist at age 7. It eventually worked for some time for Irène became calmer.
The siblings were under a lot of pressure since kindergarten; Colette and Alban raised their children so that they would always make the best out of their abilities, insisting they make a maximum of extra-curricular activities in addition to being the best students. Between music, sports, arts and studies Maxence and Irène had hardly any time for themselves and rarely did the same things as children of their age. By trying to awake their curiosity, Colette and Alban got the exact opposite for their children had hardly any interest in anything and only wanted to be left alone. These conditions have yielded a lot of nervosity in them, expressing itself in violent behavior, or intense anxiety attacks (at 11, Maxence experimented his very first burnout). Obviously they grew up as seemingly perfect students, beautiful, polite, pleasant, talented and hard-working, popular among their peers as well as their teachers. This popularity and constant attention has added an increasingly significant pressure on Irène's shoulders that had become extremely difficult for her to handle. Despite everything, Irène was still trying to be the best at what she does, craving to surpass everyone around her in order not to disappoint her relatives.

One winter day, a new student arrived; with long dark hair and bewitching aura, it did not take long for Tomie to steal everybody's heart. Including the one of the boy Irène had a crush on. From one day to the next, the beloved Irène became another shadow among the crowd of students, outshined by Tomie's radiance. With her world crumbling down between her hands, a feeling of infinite emptiness seized Irène, as if she had became a blank sheet of paper. It was worse than death; a denial of existence. She desperately tried to speak openly about her feelings to Tomie, for she believed she could reassure her about her intentions but things didn't go as planned. Instead, Tomie laughed and asked her if she really believed she could compete with someone like her.

Irène felt distraught as Tomie was making a real mess out of her ordinary life. She confided in her brother as the situation was becoming increasingly hard to bear but Maxence simply brushed it off, thinking his sister was simply jealous of this new student stealing her thunder. He added while laughing that one of his classmates had a reputation to cast spell on people he didn't like and that Irène should ask for his help. Little did he know she would take the advice literally, for this special student meant trouble and Maxence did not truly want his little sister to go near this boy. Souichi Tsujii was avoided by his peers like plague because of his despicable behavior but it did not stop Irène from talking to him anyway. Souichi felt flattered that a middle-school grader would ask him for help and invited Irène to his home where she exposed him her request. The perspective of hurting a schoolgirl, a beautiful one moreover, highly appealed Souichi who still asked for a compensation in return, to which Irène replied she had no money to give him. Souichi then offered her to make a deal; he would get rid off Tomie if Irène agreed to become his girlfriend. Irène hesitated but the two finally came to terms on the condition that it would be only a pretend game. They shook hands and Souichi led his new girlfriend into the living room for them to parade in front of his family, who were delighted that their ugly duckling of a son and sibling has found such a beautiful girl. For weeks Souichi tried to put various curses on Tomie with Irène's help but nothing worked.

At school things have worsen for the girl who found herself forced to face the reprimands of her former friends and she can longer focused on her studies. Someday eventually, Tomie tricked Irène into stealing the answers of an exam in the teachers' lounge but both girls got caught red-handed before Tomie had the opportunity to leave the place. As Tomie tried to play innocent in front of the teachers, Irène lost her temper and tried to hit her with a pair of scissors. She was stopped in extremis and sent back home. A teacher called her parents to break the news, and Colette went out of her mind, locking up her daughter in her bedroom for two weeks straight. Meanwhile Tomie came the day after under the pretext she had homework to give her "friend" and met with Maxence who instantly fell madly in love with her. Hearing her familiar voice coming from the first floor, Irène went berserk and started scratching and banging at her bedroom's door, yelling at her brother to not let the girl in, but she met with silence.

As days passed by, Irène became more and more unstable; she convinced herself that things would work out for her if she kept on studying and passed high school's entrance exam. She spent the two weeks of detention sitting at her desk, eating little and sleeping less. She returned to class the day of the exam, but once sitting on her chair, facing her blank copy, she realized she couldn't solve a single question. Then she silently stood up and threw herself out of the window.
She was rescued by teachers who brought her to the hospital and awoke to a bunch of doctors waiting by her side; among them is Irène's therapist, Dr. Nui. She quickly introced the other practitioners as Pr. Atsuko Chiba and Shima Torataro who seem to be very interested in Irène's condition. After a couple of hours talking about what happened, Chiba explained Irène exceptional psychic abilities. The stress state in which she was found was so exceptional and dangerous it has activated within her a genetic variant called "metagene", providing Irène extraordinary capacities. Chiba offered the young girl a way out by sending her to Gotham on the condition she agrees to be treated by one of her colleague, Dr. Hugo Strange. As the girl couldn't settle on a decision yet, they decided to come back later, but before the professor left, she put a calling card on the bedside table and asked the girl to call her once she had made up her mind.

At the hospital Souichi finally came to visit. Irène told her so-called boyfriend about her will to leave, asking him in an amused tone if he's going to curse her for leaving him behind. He shrugged and calmly answered there wasn't much left for him to curse anyway. Irène couldn't hold up any longer and broke down in tears for the first time in years.

Two months later, Irène flies to Gotham. She's left in Hugo Strange's hands who immediately took the young girl under his wing, treating her like a relative. Strange used to officiate as Irène's psychiatrist, and supposedly helped her overcoming a trauma but he soon experienced the extent of his patient's abilities and decided to work on developing her psychic powers. Eventually the doctor takes full control of Irène's life, asking her parents to become a mentor for their child, paying for her studies and every other charges. He went as far as controlling her diet and the way she dressed.

Boarding school didn't go so well as Irène experienced passive-agressive racism from her peers and this in spite of her Western appareance. At that time she felt totally overwhelmed by American culture and although she tried her best to fit in, her integration was difficult. She felt as if she had no ties, homeless. Strange was making a mess out of her head and her state grew worse as she caused harm to two of her classmates (pushed one in the stairs, hit another with scissors.) School's headmaster threatened to kick her out and press charges but Strange managed to find an agreement. Her grades were catastrophic, the language barrier was huge, and she was prevented from moving forward. Irène began to reject all forms of coercion and authority and started hanging out with the school's outcasts. As Irène couldn't get to sleep, she went over the wall and took walks in Gotham at night, looking everywhere around, trying to figure out how things were working in this city. One night she ran into a group of small-scale thugs and got in a fight; one of them broke her nose and stole everything she had on her. Irène came back to class the morning after, bloody, trembling and with an empty school bag. It didn't prevent her from escaping again though, but she started learning kung-fu.

In the end of her last year in highschool, Irène argued with Strange as he tried to put her under his guardianship right after she reached majority. To get the man away from her once and for all she decided to simulate a sexual assault by disguising her body; she made false marks of ligatures to her wrists by wrapping cords around them, got herself some bruises on the neck, thighs and arms and hit her crotch with a bottle to simulate a forced penetration. Irène then tricked her therapist into sleeping with her to get DNA evidence and discretely ran to the police station as soon as they were done. Strange got arrested but Irène agreed not to press charges if she could obtain a restraining order against him.
As she got rid off all authority above, Irène reorganized her life entirely and first tried to take a competitive examination to study medecine in a renowned school but failed. Instead she set about studying psychology all by herself to have a better understanding of her abilities and how to use them properly. Irène holds concurrently several uninteresting jobs to support her growing needs, practices compulsively different sports and begins to gather contacts to start her business as an improvised therapist.

Hm, interesting! I like what you've done so far. Aside from a few tenses, the English is really nice, so props to you and your betas for that! And your ideas are described clearly, retaining that intriguing feel of Iréne's facts and all. Overall, lovely work!
(Also, I feel like she and Lo would have a lot in common, especially in terms of interests, ngl.)

Thanks a lot ! I'm sorry I couldn't wait to post the sheet and be done with it, so I jumped at the chance right after Yoru corrected it for me Although if you happen to find any mistake (I'm aware of the tenses jumps, I do that all the time sadly since French allows it (we have a tense called "narrative present")) feel free to correct me !
I'm glad you liked it nonetheless (That's EXACTLY what I told myself upon seeing the Aesthetic collage you made for Lo' ! I definitely want more informations about that girl !)

Hehe, no worries. I completely understand the feeling! The anticipation is great, but cannot be shoo'ed away for long.
Send me a copy via Skype or Note and I'll correct anything I see that's a bit wonky, k? (That's an interesting facet of the French language, I gotta admit!)
Same here! I'm really excited to see what else you've got planned! (So glad that great minds think alike! We should totally just decide to do a chat or call one day to just gush about our characters! Gets things said and done quickly, and it can establish ties so easily.)

Belle job! Me reste plus qu'à faire mon fanart...

Just slovak, makes sense i think declinaisons are a bitch to learn. Because not only does it change the grammar but also the adverbs and the pronouns D:. But hey, still nice
