Tess finds Hooker at the end of another port call. When they first met, Tess knew that Michael and Hooker drank, drank alot. She never cared for alcohol or other mind altering chemicals. The Captain's drinking had toned down considerably since they bought The Stellar Cow and started working outer rim freight. Hooker, however never missed a bar, pub or dive in any port of call. She never understood why such an adorable, sweet character would constantly blot his mind and body with alcohol. It was awhile before Michael told her some of the things they both endured during the All Systems War.

It explained a lot about the Captain's disdain for the central systems government and why he chose to work in the outer rim territories. While Michael had been a soldier and a volunteer, Hooker had been an engineer, a builder when he was drafted into a war he never wanted to participate in and it had been brutal.
