No I never took classes I'm self taught. I want to take classes though - perfect what I already got, you know? Get a little more creative. But when it comes to portraits, pay attention to shapes, shading, lighting, hard lining - even the most minute details. Whoever the subject is try to execute the same thing on paper until its almost identical. You want people to automatically know who the subject is. It's never good when someone says "Is that supposed to be ::insertnamehere:". Another tip that helped me is look at a bunch of different artists and analyze their techniques and make it your own.

that's great advice(: but my problem is i try to copy what i see onto paper, and im bad at that. like, i'm REALLY bad with face shape and realistic shading. the one of mick mars on here sucks, so i reworked on it and it looks better, just notidentical to the picture I did, ya know?

The mistake I think a lot of people do when they draw portraits is that they see it as a whole, instead of breaking it apart. It's kinda like a puzzle piece. You have to do the structure and shape of the head, then you start to add all the features piece by piece. For example when you draw the ear pay attention to the ear, see how its shaped, where it should be darker, where it should be lighter, if there's hard lining. If you look at everything all at once it starts to get sloppy lol I made that mistake many times. But you pretty much have to 'build' the drawing. It's like connect the dots. Lets say you've done the structure of the head and did the hairline and all that and now you're working on an eye. 'Draw' an invisible line from the corner of the eye straight down and horizontal on the reference picture and see what falls near or on that line. Make little measurements of how far certain features are from the line. You keep doing this until the drawing becomes a whole. I don't know if I'm making any sense lol I wish I could show you by example but they are little helpful techniques I personally use to help me out.

Dude, KUDOS. I kiiiiinda do this, escept what I mess up on is like, I make faces too long or too short and eyes too big or too small or too far apart. I get the actual location on the face wrong. Practice, I guess...

Yup practice, practice, practice! When you do the shape of the head, really look at your reference and see is the shape of the head identical. If the head shape isn't spot on, everything else won't fall in to place. Another thing you can do is flip your drawing horizontal and put it to the light. You can really see symmetrical flaws when it's in 'mirror' image. Do the same to the reference pic. Sometimes I work off of pics on the computer to do this. It does really help!
