We usually imagine pets only as domestic animals, like cats or parrots, which can't care even of themselves. Another point is, that human beings can't be counted as pets because of their conscious and intelligent. But, getting back to our situation, we have comparison of two composite cases, represented by two extraordinary creatures. Ran is, actually, an elder wise animal spirit, invoked by Yukari's magic into human form. Yokais of her level can and should have some kind of minion, helping with minor duties and defending their master. Koakuma is another example, but she's different type of shikigami - a demon. So, they are bounded to their master. It's not slavery or something, neither these relations can be taken for pure friendship since one member has authority over another. Pet is perfect word, actually. We love our pets and even think of them as family members, admitting our superiority at the same time. Case for Chen is more complicated because fandom used to see her and Ran's relationship as daughter and mother's. I personally agree with that nice point, but there aren't many differences, if only we'll replace master's authority with parent's. It may seem like adoption, but don't forget that Chen is pretty old spirit too, summoned for serving and protection. Maybe Ran was just bored to live alone (Yukari enjoys her lucid dreams 20h per day, remember?), but, as we know from PCB, Chen really got her duties. So, that's definetely a pet having a pet. Also they both have tails and animal ears. Yep. Spike makes perfect shinigami too, since Twilight is a powerful wizard and he was released with her magic. Situation with Peewee is most clear. Though fenixes are demi-intelligent, having a pet fenix is such a common thing. That allows us to make a parallel.
