For this I used about 30 layers, made from random selections from some of my photos, or segments from my older 3D renders. Then a few circular paths for good measure. As I add layers, I play with blend modes and opacities, as well as alter the layer order, until I'm fairly satisfied with the result.

Wow that sounds like hard work, I'd never be able to get my self satisfied with what I'd done.
Nice pic by the way, looks like one of the abstract CD album covers you can get.
