Description
A short story that I wrote in anticipation of the new school year. I cannot believe that summer is almost over! The main character here is my OC, Wendoline (Wendy) Nott. If you don't go in for Hogwarts OCs, that's fine. I wrote the story more for myself since this girl has been bumping around in my mind for a long time. If anyone has read my other fics, she is one of the kids in "Slytherin Sisters" and she had a small cameo in "A Spot of Luck."Severus Snape and his mother, Eileen belong to J.K. Rowling, as do Mr. Ollivander, Narcissa Black,Aunt Muriel, Hogwarts, all of the stores on Diagon Alley and other parts of the Harry Potter universe. The other characters are mine.
Special credit goes to my dear friend , whose beautiful, poignant painting "His Only Friend" inspired Wendy's musings in the last paragraph. [link]
Finally, a big thank you to all of my friends here on dA--too many to name but you know who you are--who have enjoyed my fanfics and have given me the courage to post them. I love you all!
Big cookie to the first sharp-eyed person who can tell my inner geek what the relationship is between one of the OCs here and a canon character.

It was really fun seeing characters I know. But her last name is Nott! Her dad is the death eater? Interesting! I liked the part about the cat the best. Well, a toss up between that and Snape's part.

Ah, thanks for your kind comments! Wendy's father is a Death Eater, but he is the brother of the Nott (Theodore's father) in the books. I love cats and I did enjoy writing that part, just as I enjoyed writing the part about one of my favorite characters--Severus.

Wendy is such a lovely character. My favourite was her determination to read the whole library at age seven, and her thought of having to thank Aunt Muriel for her disparaging comment that triggered her love for books.

Oh, this story is so old! I'm glad that you enjoyed it and liked Wendy--she is still dear to my heart. Also thanks again for granting me permission to reference your picture back then! I think that if Severus had a pet at Hogwarts things might have turned out differently.

Have you written more about Wendy? (I mean as a central character - Maybe I'm stupid, but I haven't found more chapters of "The Company You Keep"?) I really loved her character.

Well...I see a lot of familiar names! Jonathan Davies....is that Roger's father?
I really and truly enjoyed this. It felt like I was reading the first HP book again, but with a HUGE twist. And...not to get too personal here, but these lines really got to me; "A woman who had given up on herself would not notice that her child was unwashed and dressed in ill-fitting clothes. A woman who had given up on herself would not think to buy her child an ice cream after a day's shopping was done, or a pet to comfort him while he was away at school." My mother was not the most attentive of women, although she wasn't quite the harridan that Eileen is. However, the way you put that was absolutely brilliant. It's very hard for those of us who have never really known a mother's love to try and love other people. Even though this is YOUR story, it feels nearly cannon for me.
I could go on about the details, and which parts I enjoyed the most, but I've probably already made your eyes cross heheh.

I am happy that you like it! Writing OCs in the HP universe can be a tricky thing. Most people see that there is an OC in the notes and decide to not read and I can understand that (there are some bad ones out there). Your compliment about it sounding close to canon is making me blush!
Those lines were hard to write, but I wanted to give some shading about the type of upbringing Severus had. A child who is brought up in a loving home and who is cared for will most likely be confident and socially well adjusted. Severus had the proverbial deck stacked against him at an early age. Of course as you point out there are others who have similar backgrounds but overcome them! That is probably one of the most difficult things to surmount, and which is why I love the Lily character, who showed love to a little boy who grew up with so little.

Oh, I am glad that you liked it! I was very hesitant to post it since it is heavy with my OCs and I know that is poison for a lot of people. I did have these characters knocking about in my head for a long time though, and I felt that the story had to be written down somewhere. I'm not sure if I should continue it here or join fanfiction.net.
