“What the glob!? How?” Finn waves his controller around, eliciting a giggle from BMO. He slumps into the sofa, a defeated groan escaping him, “You only pressed one button the whole time!”

You smirk, tugging your boyfriend’s hat off and ruffling his golden hair. “Aw it’s okay babe, I’m just that good. It’s a gift.”

The blonde hangs his head. “But I’ve been doing this my whole life and this is just your first time. Ugh,” he throws his arm over his face, “Jake will never let me forget this. How did you get so freaking awesome at this? I want a rematch!”

You chuckle, leaning in close to whisper in his ear, startling a crimson blush from his pale cheeks.

“You’re on.”

An hour into your competition, you’ve casually slid your head to rest on Finn’s lap, much to his embarrassment. He’s noticed that even now, you continue to press nothing but the “B” button, a simple amateur’s strategy, a tactic used in the ignorance of the game’s mechanics.

And it was working.

Your character repeatedly KOed Finn’s, knocking him down before he could get back up. The blonde’s frustration was palpable. After losing for the tenth time in a row, he tosses his controller on the other end of the sofa. You sit up and lean your head on his shoulder, realizing just how much this actually upset him.

“You okay, hun? It’s just a game ya know, it doesn’t mean anything.”

His nose scrunches, eyes glossing over. Is he crying?

“How am I supposed to protect you if I can’t even hold my own in this stupid game?”

You wrap your arms around his neck, shifting to sit on his lap. Under any other circumstance, the adventurer’s face would’ve been a deep crimson.

“Video games have nothing to do with your actual fighting skills, Finn. You know that I can’t even pick up a butter knife without accidentally cutting my own fingers off, nevermind use a real weapon and fight someone. You’re the best fighter I know, and I always feel safe when you’re around.” You kiss his nose, and this time his face actually heats up.

“I guess you’re right. Glob, what did I do to deserve you?”

Your grin lights up the room, “Just hush up and cuddle with me you dork.” You curl into his side, closing your eyes. You feel him hesitate, then awkwardly hug you. A few minutes of comfortable silence pass before you can’t take the stillness anymore.

“Hey, Finn?” You muffle into his shirt.

“What’s up?” He pulls back to look at you, eyes brimming with concern.

“Up for another round? I think you’ve been improving.” You snicker, hiding your smirk.

“Heck no, haven’t you kicked my butt enough today?” You peer up at him, noticing his pout. Cute, you marvel.

Your grasp his shoulders, lightly shaking them, “C’mon pretty pleaseeeeeeeeee.”

He huffs, but decides to compromise. “Fine, but it has to be another game. One that needs more than one button to play. And I get to choose.” He doesn’t see you stick out your tongue at him as he turns to find BMO.

You both discover him on the ground watching you.

“Dude, how long have you been there!?” Finn asks, eyes widening.

BMO gives you both a smile, slightly swaying to an imaginary beat.

“I never left.”
