Description My impressions about this new villain:
Awesome design, dark and evil... BUT SO MUCH CLICHE!!!
mlp has some of the best villains that a cartoon show can afford, I hate to admit this, but sombra breaks the chain of awesome villains. (Nightmare moon, Discord, Chrysalis) He's like the bad guy that the good ones have to destroy, so the good rises upon the evil.
This are the kind of regular overused villains that appear in shows like the carebears.
Dont get me wrong, I love this character, but he just has a few lines, does barely nothing and then explodes.(kinda sauron now that i wonder)

Anyway

How were NMM or Chrysalis any better?

NMM was isolated on the moon for 500 years, consuming in vengance (+celestia's sister). And Chrysalis at least had a complex plan to take over canterlot (to feed her people).
Sombra was like, roar cristallzzz, then blew up and noone gave a shit anymore.
And that's a shame, he was really good looking, why didn't they give him a little more of a backstory. How did he get to emperor? Did he get corrupted byΒ black magic?
Every other villain had a reason to act like that.(except discord, he just wants to have funn, not intentionally evil).

Why would anyone take over an empire and declare himself king? To stroke their pride and ego

to each to his own though

Gosh, in your style he really creeps me out.

And i agree - it's a shame that they've wasted a perfectly good villain.

Now THERE'S an evil grin, if I ever saw one.

To me, he went down more like Agent Smith than like Sauron. But I have a feeling he'll be back. Perhaps then he'll get to prove his true evilness.

I think he was just a different type of villain than the ones we've seen in the past on this show. He was more of a force of nature than anything else, at least in his shadow state. He did set up a pretty impressive magical security system for the Crystal Heart back during his rule though. And yeah, I do wonder if they may have partially based him on Sauron.

ye, but being generically evil is so overused in villains, I was hoping for something with a little bit of backstory and motivation :'I
I respect your opinion tho

I totally agree about Sombra. They really needed another episode I think in order to expand on his backstory and get a better idea of what motivates him besides "Slaves!" Even a few more lines of dialogue from him, or maybe a better exposition from Celestia, would have cleared up a lot of confusion. He seemed like his only purpose was to provide an antagonist. I'm almost surprised that he was such a bad villain, considering the stellar track record of the writing staff.

Hopefully they can pull a Red Skull and say he merely appeared to be blown apart, and then make him come back for the finale or the season premier of S4.

How was he a bad villain? I guess the hunters from bambi are also bad villains

He was the Big Bad of the episode and had almost no exposition as to his motivations and personality. The other three main villains were pretty good characters, but Sombra has nothing to go on as far as what makes up his character.

Just like Sauron?

Actually, Sauron has more character development and personality than Sombra, and they had six hours to build up suspense. That kind of "strong silent type" bad guy really only works when the buildup is slow, so when it has to be built over a mere 45 minutes then you run into the problem of not having enough presence to create adequate suspense.

I should clarify that I do like Sombra, but I just don't think he got the treatment he deserved.

He does in the silmarillions.
And to be honest, they should have focused more on the crystal ponies, show how destroyed they are, and actually give some of them a personality and a name. That way his presence would been bigger, and made up for his lack of screentime.

Really hope he atleast returns in a flashback. He has too much potential to never be mentioned again.

Exactly. He was a great concept for a villain, but the presentation of him was a bit weak, and if we had seen more of him in, say, a flashback he would have felt much more threatening to our mane heroes.

NMM and Chrysalis weren't that well developed either, heck compared to sunset shimmer sombra looks as developed as the joker. The only villain that was well developed was Discord and thats because of how simple his concept is.

MillenniumFalsehood In reply to MonkeyDZyrax [2013-10-15 09:25:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually Nightmare Moon was pretty well developed. You knew her motivations, her personality, and even got a glimpse at her sense of humor when she reacted sarcastically at Twilight's aggressive stance. Chrysalis was also pretty well-developed as well, with a look into her past with the line "A day of which I've dreamed since I was small", her sense of ego and even her motivations for invading Equestria (feeding her people, which in hindsight, if she had simply tried negotiations instead of attacking, she might have succeeded in).

By contrast, we didn't really get much out of Sombra. We still aren't too clear on his motivations for why he enslaved the ponies. Was it to mine crystals? Or to build his empire? Or was it something else? We simply don't know. His personality is also much less fully developed than the other three, with only two distinct emotional states seen: confidence and rage. We don't know what other aspects make up his personality. We also don't have a handle on his origins like we do with Nightmare Moon (Luna turning to the dark side) or Chrysalis (the queen who was brought up from an early age to take over other lands). Discord is the only one whose origins are as clouded in mystery, but that's to be expected from a god of chaos.

All of this makes for a very one-dimensional villain.

He has something noone of them have. A good presence, think of the man from bambi, he never actually appears and we know nothing about him but he makes up for it with a scary presence. Sombras personality is somehow pretty scary, its not that devoloped but that makes him more scary, he Acted like an animal, and was about to eat spike. His lack of background makes him more mysterious than the others, but we do know that he took over an entire empire and killed its leader who is hinted at being an alicorn, the rest is left for the fanfic writers. And we do know his plan, When Celestia was explaining the crystal heart she said that if its filled with hatred and fear it would corrupt equestria. So he has the same motive as Hitler.

That's true, but I still feel like it's not as good a characterization as it could have been.

We're going in circles with this discussion, though. Want to agree to disagree?
