Personal project for a good friend

A few close friends and I have been obsessed with Avatar: The Last Airbender, and as soon as we saw the Kyoshi Warriors in their ultra-feminine-but-tough glory, we knew Suki would be perfect for my friend JoyceAnn!

While we loved the design from the animated series, we were also very drawn to Shibamura-Prime's rendition of Suki! So, we took our favorite elements from both!

We wanted to make the costume as comfortable as possible, while still maintaining a believable look. So, we used a linen/rayon blend for the outer dress, and 100% linen for the dark green skirt. The skirt fabric was custom dyed dark green. We also chose a green silk brocade for accents along the arms and neck opening of the outer dress, as well as details on the gauntlets.

We went with veg tanned leather for Suki's armor. If we were going to put a lot of time into this costume, we wanted to make sure the materials we used would last. I worked out the pattern for the armor, and cut out the leather. JoyceAnn dyed and stamped a pretty design into it, and then we both worked on riveting it all together.

JoyceAnn had her hair dyed a deeper shade of red just for this costume, and Nicole Paige Brooks did her makeup!

The fans, gloves, and shoes were purchased. The glove tops were painted with green airbrush paint. All of the lacing on the armor is suede cording.
