Oh wow, this design is incredible! I especially like the coloring, the dark sea-green back and brightly colored fins. And the look, and character background! I'd love to read a story with folk like her in it.

(Sorry about the late reply - I was pretty sick for a while )
Oh wow, I had no idea you enjoyed Imprint! I'm flattered! I'm also glad to hear that you've taken the writing helms.
NaNo novels are weird. There's all sorts of strange stuff that made it into the flurry of writing I made, trying to break wordcount quotas. Lots of it has been edited out
Editing is a difficult thing. Maybe writing is a little like a hurricane, where the first half of the storm is the rough draft, and I know at times it definitely feels like you're caught in a storm. You make it to the eye, and it feels like it's over! The air is still, your surroundings in shambles, and you finished a novel! But then you realize it was only the first half of the storm, the writing of the rough draft, and how much of a mess it made of things. Editing is the second half.
The main thing, I think, is realizing what you want out of your story; what message you want to get across, how you want to portray your characters, where you want the story to go. A lot of editing is asking questions. Maybe you want a collection of vignettes, maybe you want a larger, overarching storyline. Cut out what doesn't belong, add what's missing. A beginning, middle, end, and all that important stuff in between. A lot of editing is rewriting. And two pairs of eyes will always see more than one. If you have someone, pass it out and see how they can help you with the whole process. Ask them to point out errors, weird bits, or anything else they think needs improvement. Don't forget your internet connection though! Spell checkers, thesauruses, dictionaries, guides, and even rainymood.com for when it gets to be too much to handle. A lot of editing is clean-up work. There's also loads of websites and collections out there that have way better, and way more things to say than I do.
Personally, though, I try not to rely on other sources too much for my writing. You're the writer, so you're the one who'll know best how your own story must be. You'll know when it's done, because you'll be happy. Or something beyond that; content, satisfied. Finishing is an awfully open-ended thing, but there are definitely times where you know.
Also, the best advice I think I've ever heard is to read your story out loud. It's much easier to pick up on the awkward bits, the pieces that refuse to play nice with the others, and know what to clean up when you do. And try to set aside a slice of your schedule for editing every day. Consistency is a huge thing. Chip at it when you have to, hammer away when you can. Work as much as possible. But don't drive yourself crazy at the same time! I've heard lots of theories that having breaks only helps productivity. You can probably find a good schedule online: fifteen minute breaks every hour or something like that. Don't overwhelm yourself. It won't do you or your story any good to.
I think the main reason we go buckwild with our rough drafts is because we trust ourselves to be able to fix it up later. And you can, if you give yourself the time and respect, and the effort. Lots and lots of good ol' effort.
Honestly, it's hard as heck. But so is anything else that's worth it. And seeing a finished product is so, so worth it.
Good luck with the editing, and I look forward to seeing you on the other side!

Is it weird I can see her blending into her friend's hair and someone mistaking her for a rat-tail/hair accessory?

I'm not sure she can blend in. Though jumping to the conclusion that she's some sort of accessory is probably more likely than jumping to the conclusion that he's got some sort of tiny flying eel mermaid in his hair. :0
