Description For my group project at uni - I'm in charge of backgrounds in our short film.

This was my first ever go at Matte Painting. It didn't need to be 100% photo-real for the project, but it was really tricky getting the level of detail up as far as this. Also weird not having a focal point in the composition.

Any crit would be totally awesome as this is my first go at something like this

used Sketchup, GIMP and some photos taken by myself.

EDIT: fixed as many issues as I had time for this morning. I'm off home for the weekend, so I'll sort out the rest on monday. I'm hugely grateful for the critique!

Looks good, especially the right part - almost like a photo.

Left top corner. Is it to be intended to look so dark? It gives an impression of a storm coming (hehehe... I can see dark clouds gathering there :3), but it might come across as too dark compared to the rest of picture.
A shadow on the window. If there is a patch of light on the top pane, should there been some on the one below it, too?
And that's pretty much everything constructive that comes to my mind.

Great job on the details

Thanks

Yeah the stormy sky was intentional, but I do think it maybe went a bit too far. And I hadn't noticed the window thing at all - thanks for pointing it out I think the grey blob on the lower pane was my attempt to get the shadows working but obviously it needs more work...

I'm very grateful for the crit!

Where is the white part of the last pillar?

I agree with the previous comment - the edges are too sharp even at the small version, and when I make it fullscreen, I see different parts glued together. Also different sharpness of different parts confuses me.

There are also some small technical things like the lack of shadow from the white fence on the ground behind it and - I'm not sure if I right - but it seems to me that the length of the shadow from the rails mush be the same - while here the right rail leaves deep visible shadow, but the left one doesn't.

I hope it helps a bit, because I like this one very much, the light is very impressive, and I want it to be a gret background for your animation!!!

(Will you give us a link to the final work please?..)

Oops, can't believe I didn't notice that pillar And the fence's shadow....

I'm planning to go back into it and do a lot of blending, then go easy on the Sharpen it's usually a nice final touch to paintings, but obviously kills realism when it comes to working with photo textures...

Thanks loads for the massively helpful crit

No prob
(You added the poster! You just can't leave the picture without the main focus - even if it is a background! %)))

Why is there a large rooftop in the background behind smaller roofs in the foreground?

Also, there seems to be a bit too high of contrast in certain areas, and it makes it a bit obvious that you pasted some pictures together, for example, the edge of the station facing us. There's like a white pixel-y outline around some parts that's totally distracting when I fullscreen it.

i think I went OTT with Sharpen-ing the pic. it's a habit I got into doing painting but obviously not working out here

I'll go back to my original file without the over-sharp edges and do a bit more blending.

I didn't think the persepctive fail in the bg would be too noticeable, but yeah now you mention it it's pretty distracting

thanks for the awesome and honest crit, really really helpful
