Description So here is how our teacher taught us to do the stitches. I'm not quite sure if I 'believe' it. Like...if it really works. But he knows what reads on TV and film since ...that's what he does. Films and TV ^^ I guess it would work if the talent didn't get like much scene like...just a quick glimpse, not a close up.

Makeup is rigid collodion, prosaid and thread.
Model is Brea.

The row could be a little more even-- as everyone's said, there should be little lines going across, as well.
Also, the skin underneath would be closed, but make little arcs between the sutures. Since the skin under the stitches would be pulled tighter, yanno.

Overall, not bad, could use improvement.

Thanks for the comment Sir

Yes of course there should be little lines as well, though if you're doing this for TV and this is just a background actor, you need to work fast and those details aren't seen.

I have done stitches with another technique way before I got taught this one. This was just me, showing how my teacher with 25 years of experience in film taught us stitches.

Here are my other stitches [link]

Those other stitches are fantastic.

And I could see how at a quick glance, they'd be fine.

Thanks , yeah he's been trying to teach us for tv and film. Most of the time...makeup are like only seen for a few seconds...so you can't spend so much time on them. Not like for prints.

I love the "random deviant" button.

anyway, a bit of critique on the stitches. I've actually had face stitches (epic popcorn-related incident) and the area around the cut should be reddened, with the edges of the cut kinda pale. the ER doctor used something like fishing line to sew it up. the stitches should connect both sides of the cut (that's kinda the point).

hope that's helpful!

Heyy random deviant

Omg, that sounds like an odd incident ! Oh haha I do know that both sides should be connected, I've done 'stitches' before [link] but this our teacher taught us, so I kinda had to do what he told me to do lol, I think this would be for a quick movie shot, where there's no close up (the bottom thread wouldn't read well on camera..I think that's what he told me) Because I was so confused haha, when we were doing it, I didn't understand...why we were putting the stitches on top and then the bottom is just a dot..I just couldn't understand where the left over piece of thread was...and how it would 'stitch' it if it's just...hanging there loose. But he said the the bottom line doesnt read well on camera so he's been doing films for 26 years so i'll believe him I guess when it's a close up shot though you like....do the real thing.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, it was super helpful ^^

i think the stitches look real what throws me off is the wound it looks to far healed to need stitches

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Guirnou In reply to straysilver [2010-02-03 02:54:35 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, that is very true, the wound looks like a scar that doesn't need stitches, I agree with you !

Thank you for the comment !

Maybe you could do a 3D effect on the cut and actually sew stitches in? I know absolutely nothing about wound effects but I think that would make it more believable. Your stuff looks amazing though. ^_^

PS: if you like wax, and how you have the ability to play around with the look and mold it, there is this stuff. I do not know what it is called, if you are interested I can dig it out of my kit and take a looksy, but it is like this clear gel, it comes in two parts. When you mix them some sort of chemical reaction occurs and you have about 5 minutes to play around with it until it hardens. It is clear and similar to wax that you can mold it around and it can look really realistic even in close ups. But the holding power of it is MUCH better and it is basic like a latex add on, but you made it yourself... I do not know if I am making sense. It comes in like a syringe looking thing with two actual tubes so when you squeeze it the two parts come out and there is no contamination. It is really neat, I hope you guys learn about it, I know you will friggin love it.

Ohhh I actually do like wax, like I don't mind it, my teacher hates it, but I don't mind wax for like photography and stuff, the only thing that sucks is that it cracks up with the movement and stuff.

Ohh I'm curious about your product ! I know we got a stuff it's in 2 parts as well but it's called 3rd degree, buttttt...it doesnt come in a syringe, so it might not be the same thing ^^

Aww if you could take a quick look that would be awesome. Becauseeee it looks awesome ! I know that we've been using a lot of 'bondo' lately...and i really like it, except the fact that it's super hard to remove (maybe we don't have good enough 'makeup remover' for that stuff).

you are SO sweet !

lillamake-up In reply to Guirnou [2010-01-26 03:01:07 +0000 UTC]

IT IS 3rd degree!!!! I used that stuff too in school. It is pretty much the same thing but when I went to go purchase it I got it in the format of a syringe just to make it easier and to lessen the chances of contamination, well that was all that was available. I think the jars are better, just easier to get out, but I have not really used the jars in a while!

Guirnou In reply to lillamake-up [2010-01-30 19:35:05 +0000 UTC]

Omggg yes 3rd degree is amazing !, the syringe sounds very cool, because you get the same ammount of each and no contamination, it's awesome ! Did you buy it at hiscott?

lillamake-up In reply to Guirnou [2010-02-01 14:46:33 +0000 UTC]

Actually I don't even know where to get it from anymore. I don't think Hiscotts carries it.I got it from Industry cosmetics, it was a sweet store it shut down for the time being. =/ I should try hiscotts when I run out though.

I totally never got why the knots are suppose to be in the middle it looks so stupid to me too. I just put two at either ends and I liked the look much better, although I have not done them in forever so I could change my mind if I ever do them again.

Are you still in school or are you like done, and now working ?

I finished forever ago. You are actually going to an intense make-up school are you not? Where did you end up deciding to go, I remember you asking me where I would recommend a long time ago. I went to Seneca for Cosmetic Techniques and Management, the course teaches you make-up and all, you just do not get as much time to fully learn your skills, at least I would have liked more class time to just play around with make-up. We got a lot less practice basically. I got a diploma out of it so I guess it is not so bad.

Hmm, well I'm going tooo 'the school of professional makeup' I don't know if it's an intense makeup school, I mean...we do lots of makeup work

Hey you got a diploma that's what counts ^^ Though I understand, we still got quite a lot of practice time, but I still don't feel like I'm really...good with beauty makeup, I'm really not comfortable with it yet =/

lillamake-up In reply to Guirnou [2010-02-02 03:03:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, just takes practice. I still get nervous when putting make-up on some people. Apparently confidence comes with practice. I'll let you know. I always get your school mixed up with School Of Make-up Art. It is an intense make-up school. I consider it so anyway.

And to answer your question, haha yes I am working. I have a full time job which pays the bills and I try and do make-up on weekends whenever I can which I have been doing a lot lately. I don't make money yet. Maybe some day. I actually want to go back to school for nursing so it is not my priority to make money from it anymore. Nor do I have enough free time too. If you work at it you can though, you just have to work hard, and whore your talent out.

Aww do you ? I actually don't like it that much lol.
Yeah...though my previous stitches wouldn't last in a movie, because I used wax. But these...they last better they don't crack or anything..I'll have to find my own way maybe ?
Oh he's done stitches before ^^ He's done a lot of movies ^^

Tatsu-Kitty [2010-01-22 20:28:21 +0000 UTC]

stiches are lines of knotted thread. I sew alot. now, the scar/gash underneath looks very realistic to me, but there needs to be thread coming "out" of the little red dots.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Guirnou In reply to Tatsu-Kitty [2010-01-22 23:09:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah..I totally agree. Lol, When we were doing it.I was like, not getting it. And I told him that..I didn't get it lol, so he explained...that the needle goes through the bottom (the little dots) and then, it comes out the top...and then you do a knot. Now, I'm still not too sure, if you do a knot with the left over thread that is supposed to be at the bottom, OR if you try to do a knot with the tread on the top like with the same thread not two. I'm assuming you're taking both since you want to keep the wound shut. If so.... then there,s should be like...another piece of thread coming from the bottom, to the top? no? lol I was so confused. I kinda still am, it just doesnt make sense to me. But like I said to somebody else, maybe these stitches aren't made for close up shots, they're more for like background shots (like I'm talking in films) and you don't see them a lot...so I guess it wouldnt really read. But still..HMmmm lol

Raven-Blood-13 [2010-01-22 17:13:19 +0000 UTC]

it seems like they're just put on there, maybe making it look a little bruised near the stitches might make it look a little more realistic, it might make them look like the stitches are more going through the skin then just on top of them, course i may be wrong as usual.
but it's still much better then anything I can do, I'm still trying to find a good way of creating realistic cuts XD
sorry if I sound a bit like a douche

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Guirnou In reply to Raven-Blood-13 [2010-01-22 17:50:58 +0000 UTC]

I know that's what I thought too... But like...I did what the teacher taught us so..but I was like...hmm.... (I've done other stitches before in my gallery and I find them more believable)
I guess that adding a little bruising would I guess give them a light 3d dimension.
Oh no you're not wrong, like I think they look like they were just glued on. But like I guess if you're doing someone like at the back of a movie scene and that you don't get a lot of airing time, you won't spend like 1h to make a nice stitch that you won't see...so maybe that was his point..
I'll try doing more with the bruising andddd i'll let you know how it looks

Thank you !

Raven-Blood-13 In reply to Guirnou [2010-01-22 18:40:22 +0000 UTC]

hmm that's probably what he was getting at, if it's a quick shoot then you probably don't want to spend a lot of time on a single stitch.
but you're welcome, I love your work, it's very inspiring
