Description Look! Is it? It is!!! It's... It's... A Miniature Climax?

Yes Ladies, Gentlemen, and Gentlefurs, it is a mini climax. Or "Mini Max" as I have learned to call it. The insparation came from a LONG out of production On30 conversion kit. It was produced by BVM (Boulder Valley Models) to convert the Bachmann HO scale Climax locomotive into a teeny tiny peteet 14 Ton Climax locomotive. (and they dubbed the conversion kit the "Mini Max")

I would LOVE to build this thing and have it for my Big Thunder Mountain RR & Mining Co. But it has proven to be VERY difficult to find a Bachmann HO Climax locomotive. Actually the stopped making them. (which sucks cause' I wanted an HO one anyway)

Anywho, I think we can all agree that this would be the sort of locomotive that would be seen hauling copper ore down from the Superstition Mountains or hauling empty ore cars up to the mines. I have yet to number this engine for the BTMt. RR, but I do have a name. "Clyde" was suggested by my mom and honestly I think it fits.
And as for the color scheme there will be a considerable amount of green and polished brass. But it wont be like any of the BTMt. RR schemes seen already. This one will look more like the scheme used on the "Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railraod" locomotives.

In addition to this Mini Max the BTMt. RR also has two other geard locos. One shay and one heisler. I will be making concepts of these locos but be pacient, for I do have a few things that need to be done first.

I hope you like it! And for those who both fav AND comment (and I mean a DECENT comment. Not some one liner or one word comment like "awesom" or "kool".) I shall give them a Llama badge!!!

So COMMENT IF YOU FAVE!!!!

Some said that making a geared locomotive have a Disney look/feel was impossible... I proved them wrong!

Though I can't take all the credit. The design is almost entirely based on a model once offered by BVM. (Boulder Valley Models) They produced an On30 conversion kit for a Climax locomotive, also known as a a Mini-Max.

A 7.5 inch gauge version would certainly be something to see! and would probably be best built in either 2.5" scale or 3.75" scale. (best mimicing 2ft gauge on 7.5" gauge track)

The 2.5 scale is probably the one id go for.

Maybe, I personally would go 3.75" scale. That's because it would be a lot easier to ride on the actual locomotive. Using the water tank/fuel bunker as a seat and still have enough room to work the controls. You could still probably do it in 2.5" scale, but it may be more cramped.

Ya now that you say it it would be better to do it in 3.75" scale, but im planing on making most of my locomotives and rolling stock 2.5" scale so don't want it to be out of proportion.
The only other locomotive I plan on getting in a different scale is a 1.5" scale switcher to move cars around.

Plum Cove Studios has a nice little Box Cab known as the "Generic Electric".Β
www.plumcovestudios.com/electr…

There's another small 7.5" gauge engine that's electric that is said to have a stronger motor and more robust frame. (I don't recall who makes it off hand) but I don't like the aesthetic as much as the Plumb Cove engine.

I know of the Plum Cove Studios engine I just don't find it very catching to the eye.
Also is the other company who makes the switcher that you can't remember the Mr motion shifter?

Actually I think it is! There's a guy who goes by Boilerwash who is an avid supporter of that engine.

I myself hope to get the Plum Cove engine, though I'd just like the chassis and innards. I'm thinking of building my own body shell over the chassis.

If I had to get the plum Cove engine I'd probably just do the same thing you would do.

The chassis may not be as strong as the Mr Motion one, but I do think it's more realistic looking. I have a concept for a 3.75" scale boxcab in my gallery for what I would do with the Plum Cove chassis if you're interested.

This drawing is based on a limited run kit produced by Boulder Valley Models in On30. Since Bachmann has now re-released their HO Climax loco (albeit with a wagon top boiler and with walcherts valve gear) I'm hoping that the guy behind BVM will rerelease a newer kit for it.

I could probably bash it myself, but I'd rather have the kit than scratch built stuff if I can.

You can 3-d print a cab on Shape ways.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

gunslinger87 In reply to Rockyrailroad578 [2014-07-12 16:53:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but that would also require designing the cab with a 3D modeling program. Which I do not have.

I bought some sheet styrene plastic, so I'll probably scratch a cab from that.Β

However I'm still interested in designing stuff for 3D printing. If only it wasn't so expensive.

ExtraSouth [2010-05-29 04:32:54 +0000 UTC]

It's almost hard to believe that you do these by hand, you produce some very skilled work here! And, I have to admit, that Climax has an awfully "cute" quality to it; I'd hate to see her get beat up out in the tall timber.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

gunslinger87 In reply to ExtraSouth [2010-05-29 05:33:35 +0000 UTC]

Well not to worry. This loco isn't going anywhere NEAR timber country...
She gonna be working the Arizona Copper Mining railroads!

Yes, he does have a "Cuteness". But then again it is desinged to have a "Disney-esk" feel to it.

I'm working on a color version of it. Green boiler with brass bands, wood cab, black dome with yellow/gold striping, and I'm thinking ov painting the fuel bunker green as well. The smoke box and stack will be silver/light grey.

I never really thought of using this engine is shafts, but that's an idea.

The engine was indended to handle the steep and winding grades leading up to Big Thunder Mt.

Bachmann made an HO Climax for a while. I think they stopped producing it back in 09. They're a little hard to come by now. I want two myself. (one for my HO "Empire River & Western and the second to bash into an On30 model)

THEY MADE AN HO CLIMAX!! I've got a Bachmann Catolog that proves it!

And I would like VERY MUCH to have one or two of their On30 Climaxes. But I'd also like something less than 28 Tons, hence the concept I linked you earlier.

gunslinger87 In reply to hieslar4 [2010-05-23 18:11:54 +0000 UTC]

I like the Forney, but it's back end sticks out too much on curves. Even moderate ones. I'd like a pair of 'em to convert to 2-4-0 tender locos. On with an inside frame and the other with an outside frame.

I do want their Climax loco for my WC&F Railroad. (Wolf Creek & Flagstone) It would be well suited for Colorado Narrow Gauge. But it's a tad large for my BTMt. RR (Big Thunder Mountain) Most of the locos for that are on the small side. perfect for Arizona Copper Mining.
The main motive power will be a bunch of Porter type locos. They are high priority on my loco list.

Bachmann stopped making their 0-4-0 and 0-4-2 Porter locos, which I think is REALLY lame.

I am a Hard Core 3ft Narrow Gauge fan. ESPECIALLY Colorado Narrow Gauge. (which is what my "Gunpowder Falls Railroad" is based on)

I do like the Main 2-Footers. I had a big fling with them when I was younger, but I kept comming back to 3ft gauge.
