Description Ok, I have officially started planning my "Big Thunder Mountain Railroad & Minning Co.". I started working on some concept designs for locomotives I would like to have operated on the layout once all the track work is laid.

As mentioned before, in one of my journals, before the ride we all know and love (Big Tunder Mt. RR) there was another ride in Disneyland when the park opened. Originally it was called the "Rainbow Mountain Mine Train" and the locomotive and cars were painted in a green scheme. Later the ride was expanded and remamed "Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland". I looked like a really cool and fun ride, just a little "Mine Train" traveling at a casual pace and lots of cool stuff to catch you eye as you passed by.

Well anyway, this is a drawing I made of the locomotive used on the ride. I've made a few changes so that I can Modify a Bachmann Porter into the loco above. The "Prototype" locomotive was a Dummy, it wasn't powered nor was it a "Real" steam locomotive. But even from a Steam Obssessed locomotive nut's point of view (i was talking about myself ) it actually made me question it's authentisity. Turns out that the power came from an electric battery operated mining locomotive disgused as a tender.

I order to build/kitbash a Bachmann porter into this loco will take some serious modification! Obviously the saddle tank has to go. (sorry Sampug ) New Fluted domes can be aquired through PSC (precision scale company) One thing, or rather a trick, I learned about On30 modeing is taking smaller scale detail parts and applying them to larger models. "S" scale domes can be used for the fluted domes the drawing has. The cab will have to be scatch built to better represent the cab drawn. I think scratching it would be easier than modifying the stock Porter cab.

The biggest issue will be the boiler. If I wanted to replicate the prototype accurately, I would have to raise the boiler. The advantage is that I can use the motor that comes with the model out of the box! I'm not saying I'm lazy but I don't want to deal with all that trouble, plus I like the "squatness" of the Porter's boiler as is. So I want to see if I can find a powerfull motor that's small enough to fit in the space where the original motor was. The alternative is doing what another modeler did.

Someone is building an On30 representation of the Nature's Wonderland ride. He replicated the loco from a Bachmann porter but pulled the motor. What he did to powere his loco is just like the prototype! He took a Bachmann HO street car mechanism and put it in the tender, along with some fishing weights, and that provides the power! I will only do that as a last resort as I want MY loco to be one that can actually haul rolling stock and not light weight jurry-riged "Turist Cars" from ore cars.

As for the tender, it will be made from scratch. This will also provide room (provided I don't have to use my alternate powering method) for DCC and Sound instalation. The chassis is simple, so simple that it should be obvious to Modelers wanting to add a attractive tender to their own porters. I will use a Bachmann On30 passenger truck! One reason is that they come with electrical pick ups wich will help with power pickup. Second, the side frames are metal wich helps add weight and stability, and thirdly, the just look SO kool as a tender chassis!
Now in the drawing I made mine a little too short and wasn't able to fit the center leat springs in. But it still looks really good reguardless.

So here you are my fellow railfans and model railroaders! Yet another Charming locomotive full of WIN!!!
I hope you all like her as much as I. Color versions soon to follow!
Up next, a pair of 0-4-2 designs!

I love the picture of the little engine on the past ride, and I love the idea that you're making a model of this engine, its "tourist cars", and the whole layout of the ride. Although I've went on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (and love it), I have heard of the old mine train ride, and it would be a nice idea if the Disney park executives would have expanded Frontierland and kept both Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland, while Nature's a Wonderland would co-exist with today's Disneyland. Wouldn't it be nice if we could live in an alternate timeline one of these days?

Hey, sorry for the delayed response.

Yeah, it would be nice to live back in times like that. When things were simpler and one didn't need to worry about all the political bull going on now-a-days. But that would get me going on a long conversation.

I do intend to build a model of this locomotive, two actually. When the ride first opened the train had a beautiful green color scheme. Then the ride was expanded and renamed the Nature's Wonderland Mine Train. The train was then repainted into the more well known yellow scheme and for a while I wasn't sure which one I liked more... so I opted for both!

I have drawings in color of the other concepts, here they are for your enjoyment.

Now the only real big question is what to use for a base? Bachmann produces some fine ready to run models of small 0-4-0 Porters, the the NWRR trains. But Grandt Line offers a very nice and highly detailed kit for the same locomotive. And seeing as it's a kit it's a lot easier to customize when being built.

As for the cars, I'm afraid I won't be doing much about them. I'll have a lot of ore cars for sure, but I'm not replicating the ride in miniature. In fact that's already been done. My goal it to take the Nature's Wonderland and Big Thunder Mt. rides and re-envision them as though they were an actual railroad. I'm a long ways off from building these engines, let alone the layout. But rest assure I'll be posting progress info once I get there!Β

I have seen the 0-4-0 locomotives in both their green and yellow paint schemes, and they look great! It's so awesome that you're combining the two western-themed train rides, and making them into an actual mining railroad! How cool is that! I'm so sorry that you can't replicate the mining cars, but you can paint the ore cars instead. Anyway, keep up the fine work! You're going to do great!

Sounds awesome except for the saddle=tank removal...

Yeah, sorry about that. But the it wouldn't look like the engine it's based off of with one.

Gotta hand it to Disney... they know how to build a locomotive.

It it's TOTALY un-powered!

Yep, the actual "Locomotive" was in the tender.

Love this and especially the tender!

From what I can gather, the tender is a "Glover" style one. I say this because nearly every two axel tender that uses a passenger truck as the chassis has been refered to as a Glover Style.

But yes, I really liked how this turned out. I'm really racking my brain on how to color the engine, that and what number to give it and who I should name it after.

very nice. Impressive little machine. I picked it as being based on a Porter from the start, they make great bases for beginning a project don't they?

Yes, the only issue is the motor. The one that comes with the Bachmann model is larger than the boiler diameter. It's not noticed because of the saddle tank.

Hopefully I can find a powerfull motor that's small enough to fit in the boiler and keep the same diameter. But if not, I do have an alternative powering method.

that would be a problem. finding a motor should be easy enough since there are many different types out there from other locomotives that could suit. Good luck

Indeed it does!

Now if i could only think up a good color scheme.

When the prototype first operated it was painted in a green shceme. Then after the ride was expanded the train and loco were painted in a yellow scheme.

Not sure what to do.
I may post variations of color schemes and ask you guys for help and suggestions.

Ha, I didn't even notice the lack of a saddle tank until you pointed it out! What an awesome design... the tender is fantastic. This one will certainly be an eye-catcher!

Still trying to figure out a paint scheme for this little steamer.

The prototype was originaly painted in a green scheme, but after the ride was expanded and renamed it was repainted in a yellow scheme. So I'm not quite sure what to do with colors.

Green is always a fine color... but yellow... that sounds interesting too...

I understand your delema. XD Are you trying to keep the scheme faithful to one of those "prototype" schemes, or are you planning a custom scheme merely inspired by the original?

gunslinger87 In reply to Atticus-W [2010-03-28 01:52:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, kinda both. The overall theme comes from the Disneyland/Disneyworld ride "Big Thunder Mountain Railroad". But I think that the little remembered ride before it deserves some recognition. (the Nature's Wonderland Mine Train)

So I do want to have a paint scheme that both honors the prototype(s) as well as Big Thunder mountain Railroad.
