This is great, though I need to correct you regarding the grunts. They aren't really arthropods; they are actually xeno-arthropodal vertebrates, meaning that they have both an internal skeleton and a chitinous outer shell. Like the kig-yar, the unggoy have three separate genetic varieties: The grunts from the original trilogy, the grunts in halo 4, and the grunts seen in halo 5. All three types of grunt are seen together in Halo Wars 2 as well.
Halo 4's jackals are a new subspecies of kig-yar called the Ibie'shans. The reason for their oddly-shaped skulls is because they retain more primitive physical traits from prehistoric kig-yar.

This is great! Looks a little more like the halo 2 structure though. 343 changed a load of details about the covenant races' structures, making grunts look like fish and jackals look like utahraptors, remember

Yikes, that Jackal. That's a face that not even a mother could love.
This is a very well-drawn piece. I love the detail.

Great and all, but you're forgetting some things. Unggoy are reptilians as where the Kig-Yar range from reptilian to avian.

Ugh halo wikia is a horrible site to get lore as it isn't up to date and full of wrong info. Halopedia is a more reliable canon site. Though both sites say they are like arthropods because a of they have exoskeletons. Although they are also similar to primate amphibians.

Don't be spreading lies about my bae halo! People only think unggoy are reptilian because of the shitty design in halo 4. Luckily they fixed that shit in Halo 5 and made them crab like again.

"Jackals" is the overall name of the whole species, the subspecies are Ruuht, T'vaoan and Ibie'sh
It's just how the humans call them to identify them on the field, like "Elites" and "Grunts" etc. Grunt is not the species' actual name either

I quite like the look of the Jackal... He reminds me of the Jackals in Halo 2 (my favourite Jackal look). This is so much better than the horrible design in Halo 4. I also like your Halo 3 Grunt. He looks adorable lol.

They are considered arthropods since the Bestiary states they are very similar to Earth's arthropods.

Of course they aren't True Arthropods, that would mean they evolved on Earth. But still it stands they have an exoskeleton like insects and thats why I'm guessing the UNSC scientists said they were very similar to arthropods. I chose to change them back to the exoskeleton look and not the reptilian skin they have in Halo 4.

Nothing wrong with how you drew them, I mean I <3 the picture. But I think the Unggoy in Halo 4 are probably a separate Subspecies like the Kig-Yar and Skirmishers.
π: 0 β©: 1
Guyver89 In reply to Sithvenator [2013-06-25 05:00:37 +0000 UTC]
I think that's a cop out excuse. Of course it seems right with skirmishers but when the developers/creators of Halo don't say anything then it is considered the same. People were using the "different sub species" excuse on the sangheili in Halo Wars because they looked different and had claws. Which isn't the case its just the creators'/artists' own idea of what they looked like. You can't say the elites in Halo Reach are a different sub species from the Elites in Halo 2, Halo 3 or Halo 4. It is just the artists at the time of creation's idea of what they look like.

Sithvenator In reply to Guyver89 [2013-06-25 06:20:12 +0000 UTC]
lol people actually said that for the Sangheili in Halo Wars? [link] [link] I don't see a huge difference here. Honestly never met someone so, out there, even to suggest that for the Sangheili. Unggoy and Kig-Yar are more suitable for this theory just because their appearances changed a crap ton, in addition to us knowing there are different subspecies of Kig-Yar. Of course it's all just theory at this point, but consider all the different breed of dogs [link] 0.o all dogs are just a subspecies of the Gray Wolf.

Guyver89 In reply to Sithvenator [2013-06-25 07:18:59 +0000 UTC]
But when it comes to sentient species such as humanity there isn't really a thing as having a sub species because the dominant "sub species" of Homo Sapiens was Homo Sapiens Sapiens. Sangheili have no sub species of themselves because from their culture and diet, they were the top predator and probably beat back any similar races (Cro-Magnon vs Neanderthal in similarity.)
There really couldn't be a sub species of grunt seeing as the Covenant for nearly 4 centuries controlled all of the unggoys' breeding seeing as the unggoy multiply faster then bunnies. Of course there is still ethnicity but the differences between those are mostly down to aesthetic appearance. Sangheili seem to have ethnicity among themselves, as Jul M'dama's right hand man Gek is said to be way more pale then most sangheili.
Skirmishers however are said to have been entirely wiped out during the Battle of Reach, showing that, that sub species was very very rare and the covenant rounded them all up for that special purpose.

Bungie states that all skirmishers that participated in the attack on Reach were wiped out.( That is their excuse on why we never see skirmishers in Halo 1 - 4)They were such a small population they were formed in the covenant specifically for the attack on Reach since they knew Reach was humanity's military stronghold. Of course a number of the sub species survived. Most likely most were infants and females (although female kig-yar are known to be great leaders among naval ships.)

but anyway, these are awsome!
